I probably should be volunteering but I must confess the "COVID concern" also has entered my conscious and subconscious. Yeah I'm taking all the precautions. I'm not lying when I say I go to the park for about three hours per day with my drive thru coffee and do some puter work and once in a while stop by the church (it's empty). Dick Allen
After weeks of saying 60,000 deaths would be a great job, Trump has revised that number to 100,000, and they blocked Dr. Fauci from testifying to Congress. Trump is a genius but you can’t see his grades. Trump is the healthiest President ever, but you can’t see his medical records. Trump is a billionaire but you can’t see his taxes. Trump is innocent but you can’t subpoena the witnesses. The pandemic is totally under control but you can’t talk to Dr. Fauci. 1 2

greg775
How come I just saw Florida governor say projections were off by 463,000 hospitalizations in Florida and Florida must open? If it’s so low how come they are preventing their people from reporting Covid 19 figures? Just like with Trump this governor is far more concerned with an outbreak of the truth vs. an outbreak of Covid 19.

We haven't been able to go into a store without a mask for like 2 weeks. All the stores have people standing out front and turn you away without one. Most of the bigger grocery stores had masks available for people if they didn't have them as a courtesy (since the rule was new) but I think at this point everyone just knows it. I was surprised to see airlines are just now requiring it. They absolutely aren't required here. This week's shopping trip was the first time I'd say more than 1/2 of the people in the store were wearing masks, previously it's been less than half.

Because that's the projection of what would happen without social distancing. If I project you are going to walk into a gaping hole in the ground, and you change your direction, you may not hit that hole. If, however, you change direction again to head back towards the hole, you may once again fall in.

There were a couple of people that took them off once they were in a but only a couple. It was the safest I felt there in weeks. I did hear security talking as I was leaving. Some guy got in by holding his shirt over his mouth and nose and then dropped it once he was in. They did escort him out. I still don’t understand why people can’t put a mask on. They just must not give a fuck. Edited May 2, 2020 by Dick Allen 1

One nursing home in the Panhandle, the 210-bed Southern Oaks Care Center, was reported to have had three resident deaths — though recent data from health administrators showed 94 residents of the Pensacola home had been infected. That would mean that 3 percent of the home’s residents who contracted the disease succumbed to it. Based on previous data, 40 percent to 50 percent of long-term care residents infected with the virus die. ..... One nursing home, the Coquina Center in Ormond Beach, has nine resident deaths listed. The home did not appear on the most recent list, released by the state, of facilities with positive tests. But a prior list of coronavirus cases in long-term care facilities said 15 residents had COVID-19, 11 others with positive tests had been transferred out, and that nine staffers were infected. Those numbers were supposed to be current as of this past Monday. Balta1701
https://apnews.com/b3ef23cd1a7781ee388f1345477d91d8 Quote Texas hit a third straight day of more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases Saturday as the state charged into its first weekend of re-opening the economy with residents allowed to go back to malls, restaurants, movie theaters and retail stores in limited numbers. State health officials reported 1,293 new cases, the second-highest single-day infection rate, marking the first time the Texas has recorded more than 1,000 three days in a row. Officials also reported 31 new deaths, the first time Texas has surpassed 30 on four consecutive days, although fatalities declined for a second consecutive day after a peak of 50 deaths on Friday. These would all have been cases from several days before we started re-opening everything.

It’s pretty clear the play is going to be to obscure or confuse the death numbers without doing anything to ramp up testing in Florida, Georgia and Texas. Of course, muddling through it means you’re just reinvigorating the spread to places like Gallup, NM, that lack the public health infrastructure to contain an outbreak...the weakest chains in the system; prisons, nursing homes, Native American populations, repetitively getting exploited. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/public-health/2020/05/02/tarrant-county-reports-115-positive-coronavirus-cases-2-deaths/ Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins noted that the higher case counts came without a significant increase in testing capacity. Jenkins said the daily average of new cases jumped from 84 last week to 141 this week. There was also a 38% increase in deaths from this week compared to last, he said. tray
clipped from another forum and pasted here. This is for those who equate the standard flu bug to Covid-19:-------- For anyone who knows that one person who just can’t seem to get on board with this- feel free to share. ***Let me introduce myself: I am a practicing ER doctor with a Bachelors degree in cell and molecular biology/genetics and a Masters degree in public health in addition to my doctorate. COVID is not a flu. Not even a little. Here are reasons why: 1. It is a separate species. It is no more like influenza than you are like a hippo. DIFFERENT SPECIES. 2. It is an airborne virus. This means the tiny droplets can stay in the air for a full 2 hours. So if a person coughed in aisle 4 of Target 1.5 hours ago, they may be home now but their covid cloud is still hanging there just waiting for you to walk by and take a breath. Influenza is not an airborne virus. It is droplet spread- meaning someone has to directly crop dust you with their sneeze to get you sick. Covid is much more contagious. 3. Covid is more virulent. Virulence factor is a measure of how catchy something is. For example, the flu is like beer. It takes a bunch to get you drunk. Covid is more like tequila - A little goes a long way. You need to suck up a lot of flu particles to actually catch the flu; with covid, even a few particles is enough to infect you. 4. Covid has a longer incubation than the flu. When you catch the flu, you typically get sick in the next 1-2 days. This is awesome because it means you stay at home while contagious because you feel like a heap of fried garbage. Covid has a blissful 5-9 days of symptom free time during which you are well enough to head to the movies, gym or mar-a-lago while also being contagious enough to infect everyone you encounter. 5. Covid has a longer duration of illness than flu. With covid, you have a 5-9 days of blissful asymptomatic contagiousness. This then turns into about 1 week of cough and overall feeling like hell but still surviving. Week 2 is when things hit the fan and people end up unable to breathe and on a ventilator. Many stay on the vent for up to 15 days. 5 days incubating+7 kinda sick days + 15 days on a ventilator makes for 27 days of virus spreading illness, (assuming you don’t just die of massive asphyxiation and body-wide collapse from overwhelming infection somewhere in that last week). The flu has an average incubation of 1-2 days and sick time of 7 days for a total of 9 infectious days. In the world of deadly viruses, that 18 extra days might as well be a millennia. 6. Covid is more deadly. A LOT more deadly. The flu has about a 0.2% mortality rate, meaning 2 of every thousand people who get sick with flu will die. On the contrary, the death rate from covid is reportedly 2%, so 10 times more deadly than flu. Ten times more death seems like a lot more death to me. Whats more worrisome is that 2% is actually incorrect because it doesn’t usually kill kids so that skews the average. With covid, age is a major factor in survival. If we don’t include people under 30, the death rate for adults is on average 4.5%. 9 out of every 200 adults that get this will die from it. Do you know 200 adults? Do you think losing 9 of them is no big deal? Since mortality increases with age in covid, the risk gets worse as you get older so if we put 100 grannies in a room with covid, only 85 would make it out alive to make pies and tell great stories of the old days... and that just sucks. I hope that helps to clarify why covid is in no way a flu, why you are in no way a hippo, and why staying home is the only way for non-essential people to do their part while I spend my days at work covered in a plastic poncho, sucking air through a stuffy respirator mask, leaving my scrubs in my driveway, showering the covid off at 4am when I get in, and thinking to myself “now do u still think it was just a flu?” as I risk my own life with my face 2 inches from their highly contagious, gasping mouth while I slide the plastic tube down their throat and start up the ventilator.

I’m willing to wager a significant amount of money she has never been to Auschwitz. It’s just another version of the “your fears, our freedom” argument. If you’re a genuine patriotic American, you will go back to work, no matter what the ultimate costs to families in terms of lives lost. Everyone who disagrees is basically a soft, socialist lefty who wants to take everyone’s guns away, shutter churches...trampling the 1st Amendment. Meanwhile, this entire entire time, no governor has even argued against the right to protest, if you do it safely, wear a mask, social distance, and don’t block off streets preventing emergency vehicles from getting through. It would almost be understandable...if any of their bosses, managers or CEO suits were out there with them. It’s not shared sacrifice, it’s about sacrificing those who are considered “expendable” by corporate elites to keep the profits flowing, the coffers filled. Feel sorry so many who aren’t even aware they’re being manipulated behind the scenes by all these fronts for what is essentially Wall Street and the most ideologically-extreme right wing political action committees. And no amount of jackbooted thugs will ever succeed in forcing consumers back out onto the streets to spend...in fact, for that 75% of Americans who think signs like these are reprehensible...it just makes it more likely they’ll stay inside longer to protect themselves from idiots like these. IMO- unless there’s something people are planning I don’t know about, you’re going to see some extra New York’s in the South by June, so if any state opens stuff up without getting their case numbers down first, well just watch what happens here. We are going to be the examples just like the governor said...just not in a good way my current plan is to go shopping tomorrow morning again and there’s a good chance that a week from now this state is in terrifying shape, to the point I’m scared to go out. The images of beaches, restaurants, stores here, when cases increased by 50% over a few days before things opened...I have no idea how I’m reading messages from people with good educations and jobs saying this is fine. We’ve created an ideal setup for this state to double in cases over the next few days.
caulfield12
The virus is going to spread whether the universities, and businesses, reopen or not. It will continue to spread until herd immunity is reached, which means about 60% of the population has been infected and recovered. If it were not for the lockdowns, this point would have been reached around April 20, and the pandemic would have been over already. At the current lockdown rate, the pandemic will not be over until about February 2022. 99.6% of the people who get infected will recover, and about 70% of those that won't are over the age of 65. It is inevitable that a majority of the people will contract the virus. Therefore it is futile, and counterproductive economically, to try to stop it. Let the younger people, such as college students, get sick and be that majority that obtain immunity in order to protect the minority older people for which the disease is much more serious. Have seen this particular argument popping up all over the internet recently, on various message boards. The problem is that it relies on a 0.4% mortality rate, instead of 2.0% (all populations) or the much more alarming 4.5% (adults worldwide). We can couch it in ways that make it seem almost appropriate if not patriotic for older Americans to sacrifice themselves. But this particular approach means killing 3-5 million Americans and possibly even more...because we simply don’t have a clue what will happen when hospitals are actually overrun, grocery stores run out of meat, and everyone starts turning on each other with life or death consequences. Right now, we’re at the level of shaming and political disagreement...but that 1/3rd minority pushing to open up nearly everything is going to become increasingly confrontational in their methods when even reopened businesses don’t guarantee profitability with the other 2/3rds still remaining at home. Not to mention the tremendous pressure on mostly GOP governors in those states not to reverse course and go into a second prolonged shutdown. Mississippi is one thing. But Texas and Florida would have impacts that ripple across every aspect of the national economy.

I do agree with Soxbadger that by June, this is going to all blow up anyway. It is already happening. In Stillwater OK, they had to rescind their mask rule in stores and restaurants because employees there were being berated and even threatened with guns for trying to enforce, and trying to stay healthy. Just blowing everything off is going to put health care workers at risk. The hospital system will implode. People will die of Covid, and people will die of others things they would have normally survived but couldn’t get the care they needed because of either the system being overtaxed or of them being afraid to go to the hospital. Then it all comes down to suppressing or discrediting the Democratic mail-in vote. You can probably add some type of fake emergency with the US Postal Service... Ensure low turnout: With the majority of the country still in lockdown, many states are trying to ramp up voting by mail to promote voter turnout during the pandemic and help keep voters safe. The President, however, has resisted these efforts. Despite studies that show voter fraud is extremely rare, Trump called voting by mail "corrupt" and said it is "very dangerous for this country because of cheaters." Republicans understand that low turnout has historically benefited their party. There is a long-documented history of Republicans pursuing measures that discourage voter participation. These tactics often affect low-income and marginalized people — groups that tend to vote Democratic. Given the way this virus has hit Democratic electorates particularly hard, the lack of mail-in voting could tip the election in Trump's favor. https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/02/opinions/president-trumps-reelection-strategy-is-taking-shape-zelizer/index.html
