******Regarding Puig......A Heartwarming Story

Recommended Posts

That's great that he did that. Definitely sheds a better light on who he is, and I now view him a little differently as a person. But I still wouldn't want him on the Sox. Would be too much of a distraction.

This is a great story and all, but not sure it deserves its own thread? Maybe in the Yasiel Puig thread?

Dude you can't post a whole copy article like that.   You even copied the part that said it was copyrighted at the bottom.   Please go back and provide a link and your own commentary

The Astros FO is hiring and would applaud the effort...tho, not publicly of course.

Do not believe for a variety of reasons including wanting more LH hitting in the lineup (Mazara) that team will sign Puig yet this is a nice story of someone who is perceived one way of being very compassionate and kind to children.   I suspect he will sign with another club but the Cuban connection is in clear view for all to see.  Had the team signed a LHDH which was not in thee cards then maybe Puig who has superior defensive skills and a rocket arm may have been an option.  There would have been one factor of note though in a town where the White Sox are competing with the Cubs for viewership including the Cubs issues with cable that Puig has been a fan attraction.  When he left the Dodgers he was as popular as any player on the club.  Remember Uncle Jerry has played second fiddle for years in Chicago and now finally there may be an opening to take a much larger bite out of the market.  All said it is not likely for the team to sign Puig, however, I put up the story to recognize that people are far more complex than a highlight of a skirmish on ESPN or MLB Network highlights.  Dennis Rodman had a reputation too and was one of the top athletes supporting kids that few know anything about.  Still Sox need realistically a platoon RHRF to go along with Nomar Mazara who has yet to show he can hit lefties.  With Hunter Pence and Kevin Pillar off the board the thoroughbred in the barn is Puig and a veteran option that could play anywhere is Ben Zobrist who may live local.  The story here was to show an athlete's compassion and care for sick children and the impact he had on their lives.

give it to Puig - he's a polarizing figure. He drives traffic. He drives conversation. He brings eyeballs.

Say what you may - but those type of players generally resonate a lot with the younger fan base 5-21 years old. Also this should be moved to the Puig thread. No need for two Puig threads hah.

They had choices.

Could have considered going with Puig in RF and Tsutsugo as LHDH who signed with Tampa.

Teams decided on Mazara LHRF and Encarnacion as RHDH.

Major improvement in DH with potential upside in RF but neither position could have more potential to grow on club from 2019.

Of course upgrades at C with Grandal, CF with Robert and eventually 2B with Madrigal.

Excluding pitching that is a five player upgrade with consideration maybe for one more position player to consider for platooning with Mazara in RF.

Actually Ben Zobrist is a player worthy of consideration as he can play any OF position including CF and is a good fielding 2B.

Plus Zobrist is a winner.

Big favorite of Hawk Harrelson.

Plus a switch hitter.

And another takeaway from the Cubs.

With the Cubs TV deal creating issues of who can actually get the games much like with the Dodgers in LA this could be an opportunity to really go for a major boost to viewership.

At Uncle Jerry's age I believe he would like to make a major splash after years of playing second fiddle in town.

Do not kid yourself as that could shift in frequency particularly with the Cubs broadcasting move and the Sox preparation towards potential success as a up and coming team filled with talent and possibility.

The White Sox once long ago left WGN for what they believed were the greener pastures of UHF television and Channel 32.

They made a terrible tactical error and paid for it for years.

Too few people back then could get a clean signal on the old rabbit ears while the Cubs basked on WGN and had all those kids after school and the White Sox would move to Channel 44 and the Cubs became one of America's teams along with the Braves on cable.

This move the Cubs have made may make money but like in LA where it is hard to catch a Dodger game which cannot be seen except on Time-Warner now Spectrum whereas more people chose the NFL package with satellite.

No time that the present to discover how to increase the fan base including kids.

Strange but if you get the MLB package to watch on your computer or mobile phone the customer cannot watch in the home city which frankly is crazy.

We shall see.

If you want to read a crazy story about puig, I forgot where the investigative piece was but puig went through some of the most heinous shit to escape cuba and was possibly held against his approval once they changes their demands and may have been a part of killing someone to escape and survive. His journey here is exactly why we cant have players smuggled and treated as black market assets.
