Late to the party here. Love the deal obviously, not because it’s a super team friendly deal, but for the reason that this guarantees he will be on the team for the next 5/6 years.

For comparison, Kris Bryant made $40M in his arb years and he was ROY and MVP by year 2, and CWS noted Machado and Arenado made a bit more than $30M in their arb years. I think Yoan could make $30-35M in those years based on his current trajectory. So really we’re getting his 5th and 6th years for $55-60M. Not huge savings financially, but the deal helps keep the core together and guarantees strong production from a key position during our “window”.

This all depends on what changes in the next CBA. This is why I think the FO is smart to get ahead of all of these contracts. If the players get anthing changed in those years, the deal could be a real bargain.

So the team saves about 15-20 million if Yoan is a world beater. Not a huge discount for guaranteeing the 37 upfront, but a good deal for both parties and fair for both sides. Like it.

I think you missed the 2 years of Free Agency control, which is worth more than the actual money savings.

Would have liked this a bit more if more money was front loaded vs the back end when other contracts on the team would be coming due for renewals and extensions.

Hopefully the team makes the playoffs a few times in there. If so, revenue should grow at a rate sufficient to keep up with the current contracts.

In an industry that's seen 50% revenue growth over a period of a decade MLB GMs are not going to be handing out many front loaded contracts.   Just doesn't make any sense.

With where this org has been, there is potential to be the #1 team in the entire league for top %age revenue growth over the next 5 years.

Is there any chance if the Sox get really good they cash in on a new TV deal?  How long does the current one go anybody know?

It will be interesting to see the next CBA. there were reports of a hard cap and a floor being discussed.

If he's really good, he's looking at about 35-37 million in Arb + two FA years of 35ish million per. That puts him at about 107 and he's going to make 90.

You think if Moncada was a free agent in free agency and was willing to accept a two year deal he’d only get $70M?  I think that’s at least $10M short if not substantially more.

I think his FA contract if he's really good would pay him around 35 million annually; obviously it would be more for a 2 year deal, but this is an extension so it's not really a two year deal.

Yeah, but my point is we overpaid a bit on the arbitration years to get two below market free agent years.  Machado got $300M over 10 years and could have gotten substantially more in terms of AAV on a short term deal.  Someone might honestly pay a legit star 3B $40M to $45M per season if it was on a two year deal during their prime years.  Therefore, the savings we are getting is far more significant than the savings you are suggesting IMO.

Last off season when the Sox didnt sign Machado then said the money will be spent focusing on their own players. Many posters scoffed at it and repeatedly asked, "when will the money be spent?"

This off season they have signed free agents and their own young players to a total of 336 million, pretty close to the amount that Machado would have made if he met all of the incentives in the contract. It looks like they've spent it. Hopefully, it was spent wisely.

That isn’t exactly an accurate summary.  The concern was also that the Sox would never be willing to sign a top free agent to a $200+ million dollar deal.

Sorry if this was posted already. An interesting take from Boston going back to the Sale trade.

Imagine if we had also gotten back Devers as the third piece over Basabe.
