A national emergency has been declared, cannot say who. Charting the great unknown. I will say- responding to this kind of emergency is extremely difficult because there is no practice for the real thing. We have yet to know how real and extensive it is.

IMO we will be lucky to have opening day by June 1st if we don't make drastic changes soon.

Since we won't have baseball for a while anyway, MLBPA should just go ahead and start negotiating the new CBA now. They can pretend to be on strike.

Actually, on a more serious note, MLB losing revenue from 25+% of games this year could give the players a TON more negotiating power. Can MLB owners afford to have two partial seasons back to back?

What happens on payday when games are not played.

I'm sure players won't be getting paid. The league is generating no revenue and will have to even pay advertisers and sponsors back. This is going to be a shit show for every facet of life. Be safe everybody.

If you wait til mid april and things have calmed down to controllable, the risk in April will be the same as the risk in June or August. The virus isn't going to just die anytime soon and a vaccine won't be ready for at least another year. Players will be at risk even next year. So if you can't play in April you might as well cancel the season and possibly next season too.

Not necessarily. Some experts think it will decline in the summer( hot weather) like the flu does.  But this virus may not follow the norm.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that while influenza viruses circulate year-round, they are most common during fall and winter months.   These viruses survive better in colder and drier climates. Therefore the chances that you will get the flu in the summer, which consists of hot and humid conditions, are greatly reduced."

That may be the case, but if the virus is still around, then it is still risky. And they were saying the virus is thriving in warm weather places now. But yes, viruses and bacteria hate heat, which is why our bodies get fevers to begin with.

You're right. This is going to be a shit show. There are more important things than baseball, but it is still a vital part of our culture. It is facing a real crisis just as the rest of the country is. More than ever we need to be a united country and world right now. No one can run from this thing. And, yes, it is very painful to not have baseball in the spring.

Florida has a flu season even if they are 30+ degrees warmer than the north in the winter. But they see the same drop off in the summer.

Right?  I don't see how they get 162 in.

This week has been one massive overreaction.

Everyone will feel stupid in a couple of weeks and the season will open up mid April.

None of this was necessary to begin with.

My lord... people need to relax. It's f'ing pneumonia. Not the black plague. Even IF you contract it (quite the slim chance) you'll be healthy in a couple of weeks unless you have pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Exactly. Who cares if you contract it and then pass it along to others with compromised immune systems and older folks.

Nice strawman fallacy.

The point is - Why do you suddenly feel the need to shutdown the world over this and not... something like influenza? Which spreads to all corners of the country, infects and kills so many more than this on an annual basis? This is despite the fact that we have a vaccination for the flu. WHICH ONLY 37% of Americans even bother to take annually. Old people and other vulnerable populations are ALWAYS at risk. For EVERYTHING. CONVID-19 is NOT unique in that regard.

The H1N1 (Swine Flu) outbreak? Sixty million Americans infected, 300,000 hospitalized. It claimed an estimated 12,000 American lives. Did we halt the world? No.

1,600 have been hospitalized for Coronavirus in the US. 37 dead. WE HAVE HALTED THE WORLD.

The difference between 2009 and 2020? Social media controls all of our information and is in our face 24 hours a day in the palm of our hands. Allowing you and the other herds of the masses to be totally sucked into this "PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!" mentality.

I have two MD's in my family who are laughing at how absurd this all is. "Oh, no! Tom Hanks has it! Well, let's shutdown everything!".

This is all a perfect representation of where we are at as a society. Sincerely, one day we will look back on this and hopefully learn something. This is preposterous.

Because according to CDC estimates, done before society took preventative measures, 200,000 to 1.7 million could be left dead.

That's why.

But that’s nothing compared to the flu!!!

I strongly believe the only way some people in this country will ever take it seriously is when the President OR someone close to them (family/friends/loved ones) gets sick and can’t get help because of the myriad deficiencies in our current health care system.

David Gergen was just talking about a case in Massachusetts where the ONLY way to get tested for coronavirus is AFTER being admitted to an ICU.  How does that make any sense?

I guess playing videos 24 hours per day from inside overwhelmed Italian hospitals that are doing WWII battlefield triage or the crematoriums here that were putting enough smoke from burning bodies into the atmosphere over Hubei that it was actually registering on satellite imagery might do the trick?

In addition, coming into contact with Matt Gaetz, the press secretary for the Brazilian president, the Miami mayor (42 years old), all of them testing positive...then still not taking the test and continuing to shake hand after hand in the Rose Garden, not to mention sharing the microphone, it’s basically just another version of what Rudy Gobert did.   This is 50% of the reason Italy is facing a catastrophic crisis now...not taking things seriously until it was too late.   It’s not like we can’t see examples from other countries right in front of our eyes...all we have to do is track along with Italy, Spain, Germany and France and know we’re experiencing the same outbreaks whether there’s adequate testing or not.

Finally, there’s still a patient in Omaha from the Diamond Princess who’s testing positive for the virus 28 days later!!!  That’s arguably the best treatment center for infectious diseases in the entire country.   And he’s not the only one, either.

Right...

Panic, panic, panic.

There is a huge difference between advising for preventative measures (I absolutely agree with being careful) and HALTING THE WORLD. Small businesses and many of those dependent on hourly wages will be murdered by what is taking place. And it wasn't necessary.
