tray
We should have had a national policy in place at least a month ago that would have mandated the closing of all K-12, Universities, professional and college sports, and events requiring large gatherings of people. It is sad that this problem was not focused on by our government until the NBA decided whether or not they would keep playing games.

Honestly I think they should go with 28-30 players this year, play a few more double headers, and even if the season doesn't start until May 1st, that should hopefully get about 150 games in. What I care mostly is that the divisional opponents play each other an even amount. I feel those games have to be played. Screw interleague and cut it down as much as we can. So I think there's a little bit of a underlining agenda, but it is the right decision to suspend the season at this time in my opinion. Get the playoffs and Series over before the cold weather returns. Not a perfect solution by any means, but perhaps we can have some baseball. Regardless, I don't see a 162 or 154-game schedule being played. I've heard that while this is possible, it is unlikely because other forms of corona virus (SARS, MERS) were not impacted by warmer weather. In fact MERS originates in the the Saudi peninsula where it is well, quite warm. The way this is spreading throughout places like Italy and Iran makes it seem like warmer weather won't help out very much, sadly.

This disease is much gentler on children (thank goodness), and something like 40% of nurses in this country have school aged children. If they have to stay home to take care of the kids, it could put even more stress on the health care system.

It isn't the black death and it isn't smallpox. But that doesn't mean it isn't something to be taken seriously. A couple of weeks ago I felt the same way, but in seeing what is happening, it is clear that this isn't something to take lightly. And if shutting some stuff down for a couple weeks prevents the spread, and we have MLB baseball in April as you suggest, that's great, and this down time would likely have made a huge contribution to that. If shutting some stuff down does nothing more than buys time for the health care system to prepare to handle this, then it is worth it. If shutting stuff down spreads out the infections, so the health care system is better able to handle it, then it is worth it. South Korea seems to have a pretty darn good handle on this thing. I hope the powers that be are paying attention to what they are doing.

The approach of aggregating the data like this isn’t particularly instructive. If you look at South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and HK...there’s an obvious flattening of the curve, and much more quickly than in China, where it was allowed to temporarily spin out of control for six weeks before draconian mitigation techniques were imposed. If you look at Italy, Germany, Spain and France...you’ll see the opposite. (The UK, so far, has been somewhat more protected due to it being isolated from the rest of Europe.) We are in the middle (between Europe and Asia) because of our isolated location and flight bans...but the severe lack of testing and stubbornness to change behaviors is just wiping out any advantages we had in terms of planning/preparation time.
