OOTP 21 Sim of 2020

August 16: White Sox 5, Yankees 3 (10). A 12-hit outburst by the White Sox was backed up by a surprising strong start by Gio Gonzalez (4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K).  The Sox first took the lead on an RBI double by Nomar Mazara in the bottom of the first, and they again took a 2-1 in the 7th on a Mazara home run (14). Naturally, Tyler Johnson would give up the lead on a Giancarlo Stanton home run in the eighth, and the game would go to extras. Thankfully, Luis Robert would prove to be the hero with a two run walk-off home run (10). In case you were curious, RoboHahn has kept sending Steve Cishek down through the minors, with Cishek now landing in Winston-Salem. Also, Zack Burdi was sent down for Matt Foster. 50-74

August 17: OFF DAY

August 18: Twins 10, White Sox 5. Well, it was nice not losing for two days. Dallas Keuchel (3.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) and Matt Foster (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R) would make sure that familiar feeling would come back. The Sox did hit three home runs - coming from Jose Abreu (22), Nomar Mazara (15), and Yasmani Grandal (12). The Sox walked twice and struck out 14 times. After the game, Matt Foster and Kyle Kubat were sent down, Zack Burdi was called up, and Dylan Cease was activated from the IL. Carlos Rodon should be back in a week as well. 50-75

August 19: White Sox 6, Twins 4 (10). Yoan Moncada's 29th home run of the season walked off the Twins in the ten inning tilt. Derek Fisher sent this one to extras with his 22nd home run in the top of the 9th. Lucas Giolito had another iffy start (4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K), but Moncada's three hit, three-RBI game helped to bail him out. The Sox still did strike out 12 times in this one without taking a walk - a common theme this year. 51-75

August 20: White Sox 2, Mariners 0. What a return from the injured list for Dylan Cease. It was an abbreviated, 75-pitch outing, but it was masterful (6 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K). Bennett Sousa, Ian Hamilton and Aaron Bummer covered the final three innings - allowing just three hits in relief. The Sox offense was paced by two-hit outings by Yasmani Grandal and Jose Abreu, while Nomar Mazara hit a solo shot (16) in the 9th to provide some insurance for the Sox. 52-75

August 21: Mariners 4, White Sox 3. It'd been a while since a strong pitching outing by a starter had been ruined by the bullpen, but we're back to business. Michael Kopech had one of his better starts of the year (5.1 IP, 3 H, R, 3 BB, 3 K), but Zack Burdi would blow the save and lose the game on the strength of three walks in just an inning pitched. Kelvin Herrera (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K) also still has a job, despite a 9.37 ERA on the season. The Sox got solo shots from Jose Abreu (23) and Danny Mendick (10) i n this one. 52-76

August 22: Mariners 3, White Sox 1. Another loss in relief, but with a different twist. Tyler Johnson started as the opener and gave up one run on a Dan Vogelbach home run, but that was it until the seventh. Gio Gonzalez came in in the second inning, and went 5.1 innings, but would eventually give up two runs after 93 pitches. This was all that was needed to overcome an impotent Sox offense that only scored one run on seven hits. 52-77

August 23: White Sox 5, Mariners 1. Dallas Keuchel picked up his ninth win (5.1 IP, 4 H, R, 3 BB, 5 K) in a strong performance, and Kelvin Herrera, Tyler Johnson and Aaron Bummer covered the final eleven outs with only one hit allowed to seal away the win. The Sox offense was paced with 12 hits, including a three hit outburst by Danny Mendick, which pushed his average up to .307. Jose Abreu hit his 24th home run. RoboHahn reward Johnson's strong performance by sending him down for Matt Foster after the game. 53-77

Ha what's up with this sim? 5 games with the Yanks White Sox outscored 76-14. Yankees average a little over 15 runs per game. So much for my 2nd half surge prediction . The Sox must have the worst team ERA in the whole sim maybe by a lot too. If it wasn't a sim this year would be a total disaster.

In most of these, the pitching is totally gassed. They have a team ERA of 5.81....better than just Texas in the AL (6.66). Those are the two worst in baseball.

August 25: White Sox 13, Red Sox 7. Lot of dongs out there today. Home runs from Yoan Moncada (30), Eloy Jimenez (26) and two from Yasmani Grandal (14) helped the White Sox in a game where Lucas Giolito only lasted two batters before leaving with hamstring soreness. Codi Heuer would pick up the win in relief, despite being by far the least effective Sox pitcher (3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). That was Matt Foster, who allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings. The Sox got multi hit efforts out of Jimenez, Grandal, Derek Fisher, Luis Robert and Tim Anderson. Danny Mendick went 1-3 to push his team leading average to .307. Across baseball, Cody Bellinger is up to 53 home runs, which leaves him on pace for 64. RoboHahn got busy after the game too, activating Carlos Rodon from the 60 day IL and sending him to Charlotte for rehab. Jimmy Cordero and Carson Fulmer were DFA'd, Bernardo Flores was called up, and Matt Foster was optioned to Charlotte. 54-77

August 26: White Sox 8, Red Sox 6. Yoan Moncada's 31st home run of the year - off of Matt Barnes - walked off the Red Sox and sent the White Sox fans to the bars to celebrate another win. Dylan Cease lasted just four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on just two hits.  Moncada's home run was accompanied by Yasmani Grandal's 15th home run. The Sox got multi hit efforts out of Jose Abreu, Luis Robert and Leury Garcia. In LA, Bellinger hit #54. 55-77

August 27: Red Sox 3, White Sox 0. Nathan Eovaldi threw a seven hit shutout, nullifying a cromulent start from Michael Kopech (6 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K). The Sox could not string together any cluster luck against Eovaldi - all seven hits were singles and spaced out throughout the game. Gio Gonzalez was used in relief to end the game and allowed two runs. Hey, at least with a scoreless inning, Kelvin Herrera got his ERA under 9 (8.96). 55-78

August 28: Astros 5, White Sox 0. No runs, four hits. Starting to thing the Sox may not be good. Luis Robert did have two of those hits, and his average is up to .229. The Sox again had no extra base hits as Zack Godley picked up the win for Houston. Dallas Keuchel fell to 9-7 (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K). After the game, RoboHahn sends down Matt Foster (who was actually recalled the same day he was sent down) and bring up Bernardo Flores. 55-79

August 29: Astros 3, White Sox 2. I suppose asking for the Sox to win a baseball game these days is a tough ask. Josh Reddick's ninth inning solo shot off of Ian Hamilton doomed the Sox to another loss. Lucas Giolito was fine, but not spectacular (5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) in his first start after being pulled due to hamstring soreness. Brian Dozier hit home run number 11 for the Sox, accounting for half the offensive output. 55-80

August 30: Astros 5, White Sox 2. Back to the bullpen blowing games. Bernardo Flores (4 IP, 3 H, R, 0 BB, K) was good enough. Aaron Bummer (0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K) was not. Eloy Jimenez went 2-5, and Nomar Mazara and Brian Dozier each had an RBI. Neat. The Sox will not have a winning season, but you already knew that.  55-81

August 31: Rays 6, White Sox 5. Dylan Cease (3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, BB, 5 K) was not good enough. Leury Garcia left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the foot. Tim Anderson, who had a scheduled day off, did fill in nicely with a bases loaded double, scoring three. An Eloy Jimenez two run shot (27) accounted for the rest of the Sox offense.  After the game, Bernardo Flores was sent to Birmingham. The Sox September callups will be Tyler Johnson, Kyle Kubat and Yolbert Sanchez. Nick Madrigal languishes in Charlotte. 55-82

September 1: White Sox 6, Rays 5. My assumption is the Sox will play just well enough to screw themselves come draft time. Anywho, Kopech pitched into the 6th (5.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K) and Aaron Bummer picked up his sixth save. The Sox got multi-hit performances from Eloy Jimenez (who hit his 28th dong) and Brian Dozer (who...uh...hit his 12th double). Yolbert Sanchez was 1-4 in his return from the minors. The Sox also stole five bases in this one. The sox sit 19 games back of Cleveland, and 10 games back of Detroit in 4th. After the game, the Sox called up Bernardo Flores, and sent Kyle Kubat back down. Somehow, the Sox still have to shuffle pitchers. 56-82

September 2: White Sox 5, Rays 4. Yep, that's what they're gonna do. Dallas Keuchel won his tenth game of the year (5.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K). Unfortunately, Jose Abreu left the game due to injury - the extent of which is unknown. Yolbert Sanchez hit his first major league home run, while Seby Zavala (5) and Nomar Mazara (17) also went deep. This was enough to push Blake Snell to 12-9, despite a 2.90 ERA. 57-82

September 3: White Sox 5, Rays 2. Hey, continued decent baseball. The Sox first received good news - Jose Abreu was simply day to day with a bruised hand. Lucas Giolito was also strong (5 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 8 K), and Bernardo Flores only allowed one hit in the 9th for his first major league save. The Sox garnered six hits and seven walks in this one, and dongs by Derek Fisher (23) and Zack Collins (9) paced the offense. An 0-3 day for Danny Mendick pushed his average below .300 (.298). 58-82

September 4: Twins 6, White Sox 5. All good things must come to an end, and a three-game winning streak sure feels like one of the best runs of the year. Gio Gonzalez continued to play out the string (5.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K), while Kelvin Herrera helped blow a one-run lead in the sixth to drop his record to 3-6, with an 8.47 ERA on the year. Jose Abreu came back from injury to hit his 25th home run, wile Yasmani Grandal added his 16th dong of the year. 58-83

September 5: Twins 4, White Sox 0. Randy Dobnak left due to injury in the 8th, but the Sox already had no chance. Jose Abreu went 3-4, accounting for just under half of the Sox hits. Dylan Cease had a quality start (6.1 IP, 4 H, R, 3 BB, 6 K),  but Aaron Bummer and Bennett Sousa allowed three runs over the rest of the game to make sure it was out of reach. 58-84

September 6: Twins 5, White Sox 0. The return of corpseball. Just over 38,000 fans at Target Field watched Jake Odorizzi throw a two hit shutout. Eloy Jimenez and Brian Dozier had two singles. Michael Kopech pitched well enough in this one (5 IP, 3 H, R, 4 BB, 3 K), but, again, the bullpen promptly gave up four more runs to squash any notion of a Sox comeback. After the game, Carlos Rodon returned from the IL and Bernardo Flores went back to AAA, although its probably in his best interest to get away from this mess. 58-85

September 7: OFF DAY

September 8: Dodgers 8, White Sox 4. This went exactly how you thought it would, and it eliminated the White Sox from the postseason. Blame the bullpen again in this one. Dallas Keuchel threw a quality start (6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, BB, 4 K), but Aaron Bummer and Bennett Sousa combined to give up six runs on four hits in the seventh. But, hey, at least Cody Bellinger didn't add to his MLB-leading 55 home runs. Luis Robert hit dong number 11. 58-86

September 9: Dodgers 8, White Sox 0. Clayton Kershaw left due to an undisclosed injury in the 5th. Cody Bellinger hit home run 56. Lucas Giolito lasted five outs and gave up six runs. Tim Anderson went 2-3. The Sox are officially eliminated from the playoffs. 58-87

September 10: Dodgers 6, White Sox 5. The Sox actually maintained a 5-2 lead in this one, with Tyler Johnson pitching a scoreless first as the opener, and Gio Gonzalez pinballing his way into the eighth inning (6.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K), but Zack Burdi would be stuck with the loss after allowing Max Muncy's 34th home run of the year. Cody Bellinger hit number 57 earlier in the game. The Sox got home runs from Nomar Mazara (18) and Yasmani Grandal (17). The Dodgers found out Clayton Kershaw tore a ligament in his elbow and would be out 8-9 months. 58-88 

September 11: Rainout. 

September 12: White Sox 1, Royals 0; Royals 8, White Sox 4. Dylan Cease was masterful while picking up his tenth win in game one (6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K) and a Brian Dozier home run (12) in the third was all he needed. The Sox pitching was not near as sharp in game two as Carlos Rodon's return from injury had him lasting just 53 pitches (3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 3 K), while Michael Kopech moved to the bullpen and pitched 3.1 scoreless. Eloy Jimenez hit his 29th and 30th home runs of the year, knocking in three. A Nomar Mazara solo shot (19) accounted for the other Sox run. 59-89

September 13: Royals 11, White Sox 7. The Sox continue playing out the string. Dallas Keuchel was decent (5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K), but Bennett Sousa, Zack Burdi, Ian Hamilton and Aaron Bummer managed to give up 8 runs over four innings to make sure the Sox didn't have a chance. The Sox got a 3-4 performance out of Yoan Moncada, while Yasmani Grandal his his 18th dong of the year. 59-90

September 14: Athletics 6, White Sox 4. Lucas Giolito struck out 11 over 5.1 IP, but he also gave up six runs, which really hurt his chances in this one. Eloy Jimenez his his 31st dong, while Yoan Moncada had another multi hit game (2-3, R, RBI). Michael Kopech struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief. 59-91

September 15: Athletics 6, White Sox 0. Eloy Jimenez and Nomar Mazara had the two hits in this one for the Sox. Both were singles. Chris Bassitt struck out 10 over 8 innings, allowing one hit. 59-92
