FS: 2020 Draft Updates and how it affects the White Sox

The union turned down the latest 2020 Draft Proposal from the owners. The draft is still expected to take place on June 10th but that's all that's really known at this point. An update tonight from Jeff Passan suggests that the draft will in fact be just 5 rounds

Someone fill me in, please.

The owners want a very limited draft this year because,

1. Revenues are down.

2. Minors are closed, so no place to play these kids.

3. MLB was unable to scout school kids because of the virus.

4. They wanted to do this all along.

The financial aspect doesn't make sense though because they really aren't saving any money. The White Sox have $7.7 million to spend in a 5 round draft. In a10 round draft, it would be $8.8 million. Everyone after that was limited to $125K anyway. The owners are doing this to defer payments for two years and save a couple million per team. It's fucking stupid. And there are many stories like Paul Goldschmidt for example. He was an 8th rounder. What would happen to him in a year like this?

I'm not sure its stupid of the owners. They are being asked to make major financial/cost decisions based upon insufficient information. As badly as I want to see the draft happen in June, if I represented the owners, I would try delay it as long as possible until, hopefully, we have reliable visibility into a possible vaccine, without which, its impossible to predict revenues for 2021 and beyond.

The baseball people want the draft longer but the owners see it as an unneccessary expense considering the draftees most likely won't be playing this year and money is going to be very tight even if they're able to come to a pay scale agreement.
