2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion

the ONLY thing I find funny is how recently sox seem to have gone against logic of the draft in recent years.

2 years ago it was a class deep in HS pitching and light on college bats, they went all college bats

Last year was light on high school pitching, they go after hs pitching for first time in years with 2 picks

This is one of the deeper drafts in memory - they go for a 2 person draft.

So someone break it down for me. One area I'm not great with.

What would the Sox need to do to get both these guys signed? What is Kelly in theory asking for, and what is slot for that pick? If they were to sign him, what does that mean for picks 3-4-5?

Crochet slot is like 4.5M, and I'd bet he'd sign for $3M... Kelley is asking for 3-3.5, slot is 1.6M or thereabouts... essentially they get both signed by Crochet signing that underslot deal.  Picks 3-4-5 will probably be majority college seniors with maybe 1 slight over slot.... if we can swing it... where they have no choice but to sign for whatever we offer them or else they don't play baseball.  Lol

The Sox probably locked up Crochet's price range early yesterday morning.  They know what it is.  They obviously would have wanted to wait until the last minute to make sure Crochet didn't rise enough to rise his price.  But I think if I'm Crochet's agent I am trying to get him to the Sox anyway so I bet the agent and Crochet would have been more willing to talk discount with the Sox given their history with LHP and Sale particularly.  So they aren't taking Kelley blind.

I'm going to throw out that kelly will sign for less than his "rumors"

Yeah, they know they can sign both. Otherwise he wouldn't have been the pick

Landon Knack (BA RANK: 113 )

East Tennessee State RHP

Notes:

Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 220 | B-T: L-R
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 22.9

Knack is the top-ranked senior in the class and a good bet to be the first member of that class selected in 2020. A 6-foot-2, 220-pound righthander, Knack spent two years at Walters State (Tenn) JC, where he showed solid strike-throwing ability and average stuff. The same was the case in 2019 at East Tennessee State, where Knack posted a 2.60 ERA over 15 starts and 97 innings. What changed from the last three seasons in 2020 is the pure stuff. Knack’s fastball velocity made a big jump, going from a pitch in the low 90s to a fastball that bumps 97-98 mph at his best and is 92-95 deep into his outings. His offspeed stuff is more fringy at this point, with all of his secondaries flashing average at times but not in that range consistently. His curveball is his best secondary pitch at the moment, again flashing average at times. There’s some effort in Knack’s delivery and it’s not the loosest or most fluid one you’ll see, but he repeats it well and has a lengthy track record of throwing strikes. His 2020 numbers in 25 innings and four starts are ridiculous, as he racked up 51 strikeouts (the most of any Division I arm) to just one walk. While Knack is right at the top of the list of priority senior signs, his age could limit how high he climbs in the draft. He should go off the board at some point in the third or fourth rounds.

We really don't know it's a 2 person draft yet.

Remember the "talk" about how Sale and his agent knew he was going to be in Majors his draft year unless he absolutely imploded in the minors.  There could be some wink wink handshake stuff too.  Plus as I state in another post, and I'm sure something a lot of people already thought before, if you are Crochet's agent, this is a team you probably really want to fit him with.  We might have paid for Kelley with Crochet for all we know ATM.
