You'd know more than anybody here, do you think a guy that has ruptured his achilles twice has any chance of avoiding kinetic chain problems going forward?

It's hard to tell. Those injuries are just so rare in people his age, let alone doing it twice. The weakest link in the lower extremity kinematic chain is the knee due to it being in the middle between one close chain element (foot) and one heavily muscular supported joint (hip). It's the joint that research has shown has a decrease risk of injury relationship with weight. This is why knee injuries are so common.

The primary issue for him will be to make sure he has full range at the ankle. If he lacks any range it will transfer more force up the chain to the knee and cause issues.

Thanks, I have only recently learned (well within last year) how important the ankle range of motion and strength is to preventing the entire host of chain injuries further up the ladder, including knee and hip issues.  Since I learned I've been doing a lot of ankle strengthening work in my training.  You the man, man.

don't know how into it you are but there is a great deal of research on using minimalist shoes during workouts because they are much more effective in the build up the strength and control of the ankle and foot.
