My only concerns are more general in nature, and not necessarily specific to Yolmer:

  • A tendency to return to what's familiar over trying something new/different;
  • Carrying too many of these types of players on a roster;
  • The person filling out the lineup card who reflexively keeps playing them, or worse, batting them high in the lineup

I'm with you on all of these points but I don't think Yolmer is an example of them in this case.

I genuinely cannot fathom some of the reactions to this, both here and on twitter. He's a gold glove caliber utility infielder who fits well into the clubhouse, doesn't cost anything, and provides valuable insurance to multiple positions. He is EXACTLY what we needed for the next half of the season, given that Leury is out, Madrigal got hurt, and Moncada is perpetually banged up.

Welcome back Yolmer.  I'm glad to have you back.

Yolmer fits well with what this team needs right now.  Especially with what we've seen from Moncada struggling with his health, and Leury on the IL.  Yolmer can step in and play absolutely great defense.  I'll take that guy as a bench piece any day.  He isn't the answer to all the issues, but he in an answer to some of them.

I think the problem is he could have an aluminum bat and still not be able to hit the ball.

In addition to gold glove defense at 2nd (and serviceable defense at the other IF spots), Yolmer Sanchez's average OPS+ over the last 3 years was 85, which is higher than the highest OPS+ Ryan Goins has ever put up in a single year.

Assuming Yolmer hasn't forgotten how to play baseball, this is a clear upgrade. I don't want Yolmer as a starter, but Iove him as a utility player.

Bring back Ozzie and Tatis Jr and than we can quit bringing back familiarity

They've said thats normal (for a coach to grab a glove and stand at a position) for simulated games.

I used to do it at times in minor league practices when I was the AT. I ducked a lot.

1. It's a season were people are and will continue to drop like flies. When someone needs to be brought in from outside for insurance, there's nothing wrong with going with a familiar face.

2. Like?

3. meh, I guess. Not too worried about it

1- The Sox have gone through a considerable number of infielders due to injuries.

We started with Moncada, Anderson, and Leury.  All three have missed time.  Next in line were Danny Mendick, Nick Madrigal, Chestlor Cuthbert, and Ryan Goins.  Madrigal has missed time due to injury.  Mendick is playing every day due to Madrigal and Garcia missing time currently.  Goins and Cuthbert suck.

2- In 2020 we are seeing a much higher than normal injury rate across MLB.  You need more depth than ever, meaning there is no such thing as too many of these types of players right now.  We have already used 7 different IFs.  Yolmer would make #8 if he makes it here.

3- A lot of this has depending on health and injuries.  There really hasn't been a time this year where the roster has allowed the Sox to run an infield out there with sub-par players on anything other than a single game basis.

I like the move, he is liked in the club house is exactly what we need for a bench piece and far better now that Goins and Gonzalez.  Provided we make the post-season last i read Leury should be able to make that roster.

Goins is a 32 year old pinch runner with 6 career stolen bases. You really don’t need to know more than that.

Goins used to be a hell of a defender. He's still a real good one. He just never figured out how to hit. He was elite at 2nd base defensively when he was younger with the Jays.

Agree though that he's not better than Yolmer at the role anymore.
