Major draft changes happening in 2021

Couple things I'm interested in:

- With Great Falls now gone, do we see the DSL become more important and better talent? Sox have been moving virtually all their classes to AZ after a year in DSL if they are worth anything at all. But now their HS and College classes will need to go there.

OR - Is there just going to be more of a "backfield games" contingent in AZL before guys go on to Kannapolis. So a bunch more players, especially the 16/17 y.o.s may be at the AZL complex but not competing for AZL games.

MLB really needs to add international players to the draft.  There is no good reason not to.

the reason not to is just that owners want it so it's leverage for the players union, so it just depends how much owners want it. They've put so much structure around it that I'm not sure they'll care too much if it's compared against...giving players more money.

I think the second option will be the choice based on the article. Keep it more instructional and more controlled the first season instead of playing full games as the rookie leagues did.

It makes sense.  Medical checks big.  After world series makes sense.  It was cool to see your teams draft pick play but if he blows out his arm, not so cool.

Long overdue move.  I'm a little concerned about how development will work for high school guys now the first year but for some reason I'm oddly confident in the Sox' revamped staff to make it work.

I think it will work better. The clubs can watch them more closely in controlled situations and not just throw them into games as they did before. Lots of simulated and situational games to decrease stress on the arms. Because you know in playing real games they will do things they aren't supposed to due to the competitive nature of the players.

The Sox have already kind of done this with a lot of their players.  Their top end guys break in slowly right after their draft year, especially on the pitching side.

And there is still a couple of organizations that just don't believe in international free agency or allocating resources and money towards it annually. Baltimore comes to mind. Having a draft might force them to spend money that they haven't budgeted for in previous years. So I could see them also being against a intl draft.

I am also going to guess that if the draft is moving this far back, that there is zero chance the international signing day will be July 2 either.

It won't be. The 2020 period opens on January 15, 2021 and the 2021 period is scheduled top open on January 15, 2022. I'd think there's an international draft after that.

It's a definite issue. The White Sox should have a 2nd AZL team. They have so many really young outfielders and nowhere for some guys to play. Many college players will need to go right to Kannapolis after being drafted.

So out of curiosity, does this change who can sign during this periods, or is it the same kids, just six months later?

So you’re thinking two more classes before an international draft?  When does the younger Tatis  become available?  2021?  Is there still some hope there?

It depends. It's the same kids, mostly. Every team basically already has all their money spent on agreements. Some teams are screwed though. I think the Padres reneged on a few offers because they overcommitted, knowing that they could trade for more $$. MLB is outlawing the exchange of international funds which messes with some teams. Look at Colas for example. If he gets cleared to sign in November, theoretically he could've signed in this period that was supposed to start in July (now starts in January 2021) but he could decide to sign in July of 2021 instead. Now he doesn't really have that luxury and everyone is out of $$. If he waits now, he can't sign until Janury of 2022 and he'll be like 23 or 24 already by then.

He's supposed to be the 2022 class I think but I'm not sure. I've heard he's signing here but there could be an international draft by then.

I was thinking more of the birthday deadlines.  Did some kids get switched from the July 2, 2021 class to the Jan 15, 2021, because of their birthdays?

I thought JR was adamantly opposed to signing 15 year olds....?

Well, they already have Enoy Jimenez, and who can forget the Danks brothers...?

You seem to forget they tried to draft Jordan Danks before they traded for John Danks.

Also, they have nothing to do with international signees.

And would the younger Tatis maybe fall to the Jan 15, 2022 class?

It is more of the agreement of deals years in advance for kids who are 13 years old, and the under the table stuff that happens there with the extra agreements that happen, etc.

I don't think it matters. I think they're keeping the classes the same. Teams don't have any $$ anyway.
