The Senate trial is conducted under essentially whatever rules the majority want it to be conducted. If McConnell and 18 other Republicans wanted to remove him, they could have a 1-day trial if they wanted.

As we saw a year ago, Mitch was perfectly happy to largely rush through everything. If there is an iron-clad case for immediate removal, it could be done in a day or two. That our government doesn't really have a mechanism for removing a clearly unstable President, since the 25th is meant more for physical incapacitation, is another mark against it! If Pelosi had the votes, which she doesn't otherwise it would be on the table, it could get through the house without debate. The thought isn't really that he gets removed through impeachment. More that it is sitting in the senate and they could vote to remove him for the next few weeks is better than the serious unknowns of the 25th. The trial, etc, of the senate aren't necessarily things that have to take a long time, but we are obviously in weird times and he gets officially removed in two weeks. This is mainly leverage over the executive.

I posted that link yesterday (non-humble-brag) and also out of that same poll, more than 1/2 of the self-identified Republicans in the poll said that anything that happened there was Joe Biden's fault, when given the option between Biden, Congressional Republicans, Trump, and Congressional Democrats. What happens if Trump still acts like he's president and you have a 2 popes issue. The 25th Amendment is a clear legal process. If it was followed, then even if Donald Trump gave an order, following it as though he was still the president would be illegal. If someone in the Cabinet or the Defense Department is willing to break the law to support Trump, why would it matter if it was 25th amendment or impeachment? Either way, theyr'e breaking the law and trying to overthrow the government to follow Trump.

If that guy is indeed Secret Service, and Pence is nearby, that's how it's going to end every time. I don't know whether the part about that being Pence's detail is accurate, but because the person shot wasn't a fleeing black man I think there's some reason to expect that it will be investigated whether or not that shooting was justified. They may have panicked, they may have pulled the trigger accidentally, I will make no guesses about that. I still cannot get over the 5 guys in Riot Gear just standing there and allowing it. They're in full riot gear, they couldn't block that door for a few minutes to give whoever was on the other side a chance to move out? Whether that was Pence's staff or security of someone in Congress, they had only a handgun, no riot gear, as defense, and the 5 Capitol policemen did nothing to assist that person. They could block that door for a few minutes until whoever was on the other side had moved to safety, and even just open the door right afterwards. They didn't have to hold that line the whole afternoon. That's literally a security person on the other side, they're supposed to be on the same side!! The mob brought zip ties with them, if that was the VP or some Congressperson's staff on the other side, were they ok with hostages being taken?! daggins
I think even impeachment is a pipe dream - 138 congresspeople, even after everything that happened yesterday, voted to not certify PA results. The rot is too deep in congress to even get common sense things done.

StrangeSox
Impeachment is a privileged motion. Any member of the House can bring it to the floor, and it can skip the usual committee requirements. Coincidentally, the House adjourned until the 19th. edit: well this is at least something, hopefully they get on this ASAP Edited January 7, 2021 by StrangeSox

There are a number of other videos. Police calmly walking the insurrectionists out of the Capitol building. One of them on video helping a woman down the stairs of the Capitol. While that guy was taking selfies, another of his colleagues, who appears to have a different skin color in the video clip, was being chased up a different stairwell nearby by the mob. Take selfies or render assistance to your colleagues? If a few officers opened gates, and a few others didn't do their jobs inside even when they were on video, this is a problem for everyone, including the ones who were being overwhelmed. I don't know what it will look like because of Pandemic, but in 13 days this same facility will host a presidential inauguration with many of the same officers. An after action report for that event saying "we had 1000 officers on site and 99.8% of them did not let in bomb-wielding Presidential assassins" would represent a spoiled bunch, and that means somehow more action needs to be taken to weed out the bad apples, rapidly. “No good tree bears bad fruit just as no bad tree bears good fruit. Dick Allen
Trump is only going to get crazier, while he is in office, and when he is out. 4 years from now, what you see now will be considered mild. It's only going to get worse. The family is weird, It appears they have abandoned the real estate business, and now aim to be a big political family what with Ivanka wanting to run for the Senate, Don Jr. with the RNC, and Eric promising to primary every R who didn't fight back last night.
