2020 Election Thoughts

The notion that a President cannot commit a crime while in Office (which was stated in some kind of a Justice Dept. memo) doesn't seem to make sense.  For example, if the Senate found Trump guilty of Inciting an Insurrection against the government (or even Treason) , he just walks away Scott free ?  Oh yea, he committed Treason or whatever but his term is now up so OK, no problemo.   If a President cannot be held liable for any crime while in office then Trump may not need a self-pardon.  He just relies on that and his Supreme Court Justices to knock down any attempt to Prosecute him for  any crimes while on Office.

The logic in this case is that the President is actually in charge of the people who would have the job of prosecuting him, which creates an unavoidable contract of interest at the federal level. Thus, the first step is not a legal step, but is instead a political step that is outlined in the constitution, impeachment - removing him from office to strip him of that control over the justice department first.

Without creating additional rules to guarantee the independence of federal prosecutors or to separate the DOJ from the President, that isn't an unreasonable logic train. That's the way the system is supposed to work - if the President is committing multiple crimes or trying to overthrow Democracy, the Constitution assumes he will not have an entire political party supporting those crimes.

Proving that Jack Dorsey is more powerful than Russian/Ukrainian troll farms.

Somehow, this will be turned around into yet another argument about "cancel culture," how conservative voices on the right are being silenced and Section 230 "censorship" by Big Tech companies (which ironically is opposed by the majority of GOP conservatives, despite Trump's current obsession).

The best argument I've seen made (against) is that fact that tracking these groups is becoming increasingly challenging for the Feds because they're now going underground and migrating away from mainstream sources like FB, Twitter, Parler, Reddit and 4chan...to the infamous Dark Web.

I want to see Trump tried in the Senate so they get to the bottom of s what went on leading up to the Jan 6 Capitol invasion by Trump loyalists.

We need to know, so this never happens again.

I think we're going to learn some very disturbing things about the Capitol attack over time.  I wouldn't be surprised if a few GOP lawmakers are arrested and/or expelled from office.

Arrested? I agree, but it takes 2/3 to expel, and I don't see Republicans having the balls to expel one of their own.

Yeah, not enough of them anyway.

I just looked it up and saw that since 1789 only 20 members of Congress have been expelled.

I was reading a NY Times article that quoted one of the rioters who said it's what Cruz would want so it's OK.

How are these "patriots" going to react when Trump and Cruz can't protect them from prosecution?

Which leads to if Trump is planning a pardon dump he's got about 24 hours to do it.

At this point, I don't care if Trump is convicted or not. But the whole thing needs to be investigated. The government will lose credibility if it tries to sweep this under the rug. And that type of action only fuels the paranoids. Finally, we cannot ignore political violence any more. We are supposed to be a democratic society. Things like this shouldn't be happening, and we need to figure out why it is happening.

Of course the President is the King of Cancel Culture by targeting anyone who speaks out against him.

Not only that, Trump denied Biden a government aircraft to get to DC. First time that has ever happened. Trump was given one by Obama. Can a person really be this petty? Good riddance.

Especially after the Capitol attack made his Amtrak route from Delaware more vulnerable...

Of course, Johnson himself came one lone vote from being impeached, as chronicled in Profiles of Courage.

Let’s just hope Biden can do better than Grant.

Finally, that pardon dump will come late Tuesday night, after the news....or very early Tuesday morning to be yet one more thing to distract from Biden’s inauguration.

A look at some of Trump's promises and how he kept them.

He was going to repeal and replace Obamacare on the first day. That still hasn't happened even though Trump did find that health care can be complicated.

A new border wall would be built and paid for by Mexico. Trump's administration wasn't a week old when Mexico stated it would not pay for a fucking wall.

He would bring in "only the best people." Instead he brought in lunatics like Steve Bannon, the pillow guy, and his "dumb as a brick" daughter. The few good people there were either resigned or were fired.

He was going to revive our sagging industrial base by an aggressive trade policy. He made a feeble attempt at this, lied to the people of Michigan about new auto assembly plants in that state when there were none. Instead there was a loss of 3,000 auto worker jobs.

Promised the virus would go away. It didn't.

Said the United States would regain respect from around the world. Instead, the UN General Assembly laughed right in his face, and foreign leaders openly mocked him. Other nations pitied us.

Whined about a crooked election. The only thing that was crooked was his brain.

There would be "so much winning." He did set a record for impeachments. I bet it is never equaled.

Funny stuff, isn't it?  And let me add:

End North Korea Nuclear program...

$1 Trillion investment in infrastructure...

Bring back coal...

Eliminate the deficit!!!...

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Here were some highlights from some of the gems I saw on a Facebook post today.

Person 1: “Make sure you have water and food. Talk to your kids in case we lose cell phone usage. Now who is going to have electricity to heat a house. Talked to Com Ed today who is on high alert for power outages and blackouts.”

Person 2: “Bought a massive generator this past weekend.”

Am I missing something? Is China taking over the utilities and is civil war coming that will cause a food shortage and phone lines to be down? I’ve got to see what Parler is feeding folks this information, I’m almost hesitant to ask them where they got this information to reach these conclusions...

Cant wait for tomorrow, I hope Biden and Harris stay safe and healthy. There’s so much to be done with divided government over the next four years and lots to be optimistic about even in times of turmoil.

The Senate has the power to issue subpoenas, make requests for documents, call witnesses to testify and conduct open hearings.

Hopefully they will find out  how  Trump's attempted coup almost succeeded, who was behind iy, and why.

We also need to hold the 139 Republican Congressmen responsible:

"January 6, 2021, will surely live in infamy—the day the United States Capitol was stormed by a mob, forcing legislators to evacuate in a rush and leaving five dead, including a police officer.

The most dangerous part of that day for the country as a whole, however, was not what happened when the insurrectionists fought their way into the Capitol in the afternoon, but what happened just a few hours later on the floor. After all that mayhem, the legislators were escorted back to the chamber under heavily armed escort, and a stunning 139 representatives—66 percent of the House GOP caucus—along with eight GOP senators, promptly voted to overturn the election, just as the mob and the president had demanded.

Unlike the insurrectionists, they were polite and proper about it. But the danger they pose to our democracy is much greater than that posed by the members of the mob, who can be identified and caught, and who will face serious legal consequences for their acts. Donald Trump’s ignominious departure from office—whether he is impeached and removed, resigns, or simply sulks away in disrepute—will leave us to solve the problem of the politicians who worked hard to convince millions that the election had been stolen, and then voted to steal it themselves. "
