2020 Election Thoughts

I am not disappointed that Trump lost but also not really happy to see Biden and/or Harris run the country but what I really find disappointing is how some local things played out.

As with the White Sox managerial hiring.  We are in a better place today than we were yesterday but I am not all that excited about it.

By the way, Democrats should be self reflecting right now but instead they'll think their strategies have worked.

This election has been a disaster for Dems, and it's because they have promised so much and then sided with the elite far too often.

A disaster? They’re 1 senate seat from a majority with the VP, they have GA runoffs and several close races left, and they expanded their house majority.

It has been closer that my blood pressure would like, but I’ve seen disasters. 2016 was a disaster and it caused the mess that is this year.

That's why Trump made that speech.  He wants to sow doubt and destroy the process so he can try to get this into the courts.

As much as I don’t want to play this game, I’ve also lived through ballot counting being stopped by a riot so I will say this. Joe Biden should give a victory speech soon. The reason they tried this last night is that there was a chance it would work. Use the same tactic.

Now we just need to hope this isn't close enough for the dope in chief to fight it in the courts.

Let's goooooo.

Close enough to *successfully* fight. He’s gonna fight.

Your out of your mind if you think the Dems will ever self reflect. Biden did have a lot to overcome, but man the performance with minorities is.....yikes

Yup. Even though it looks like Biden will win, this election was absolutely handed to the Dems on a silver platter. Impeachment, COVID, terrible unemployment. And they end up winning against the incumbent with a low 40% approval rating by how much? Less than 1% in Wisconsin? Maybe 2-3% in Michigan and PA? Lost by 4% in Florida? I mean by Florida standards that's not even competitive. It also looks like they won't get the majority in the senate either. Beating Trump makes it not a complete disaster, but this was pretty close to it.

Sadly it is close enough that if he isn't in prison by 2024, it leaves Trump a path to antagonize for 4 years and then run again.  The Biden win should have been definitive, and it wasn’t.

Florida went to $15 minimum wage with a SUPERMAJORITY and they still found a way to get waxed by Trump

You’d think eight consecutive years of seventy-somethings would be more than enough...especially when the Cold War with China is increasingly going to be waged over advanced tech.

If you’re Haley, Pence, Pompeo, Rubio, Cruz this was about the worst possible result looking down the road to 2024.

Maybe there’s an agreement not to prosecute Trump out of office if he makes an agreement not to ever run again...

Totally.  It really shows just how awful the democratic message really is.  The far left scares the shit out of most Americans over 25, and the middle left is just a mess of messaging and policy confusion.  The only reason the dems won is because they “weren’t Trump”.  That won’t work in 2022 midterms.  This isn’t a mandate for anything.

That made no sense to me. I'd like to see how the Cubans who were scared of Biden's socialism voted on the minimum wage prop.

As someone who wanted Trump to lose, I should be happy right now because it looks like that might happen.

But I can't help to just feel defeated by this election. Something in me feels like it broke seeing how this all played out. I see so many problems I feel we need to deal with, but no path to do anything about them. I had faith that things would be different. It felt different. And apparently it was, just not in the way I thought.

One thing is clear from this election, especially based on what we saw from Florida and Texas: The Democratic party is out of touch with Latinos.  That is something they need to fix moving forward.  Even if Biden wins, 2024 looks iffy.  It will be increasingly difficult to keep a Democrat in office if the Republican party regroups and puts up a better candidate.

I still think the Republicans need Trump. The 2018 midterms weren't even close in states like PA and MI. But this time, even after all the shit that went against Trump in 2020, he outperformed the GOP in 2018. There must be a section of voters who aren't devout GOP voters but will definitely vote for Trump.

Bernie was was cleaning up the Latino vote in the primary, but uh hard to see how Florida would have played out any different.

Latinos in Florida are different than the rest of American Latinos because they mostly come from Cuba and the Dominican and they have a different viewpoint of socialism compared to Mexican Americans.  Far-left agendas would scare off Florida Latinos from Miami.  Not saying Biden is far left...but Trump did a good job in scaring him that he was.

First step would be recounts.  I think they're mandatory if the margin of victory is under a certain percent.  What could a court challenge be based on?  Counting votes?

Agreed...recounts will happen where needed.  But I saw in the FiveThirtyEight chat that while recounts are common...reversals in recounts are extremely rare.

No I know, that is what I was implying.

I'm surprised and pleased that this thread is still alive.  When I started it a while back I fully expected it to be closed by election day.  But SoxTalk continues to be one of the best sites to visit with a bunch of great folks having (for the most part) courteous conversations.

The few times I woke up last night, I went right to this page to see if there were any updates.  I certainly appreciate those who have been relaying what they've heard.

I went to bed last night certain that 2016 was repeating.  Now it seems like Biden has a more clear path to winning.  We won't know for a couple days, I'm sure, but we may have a better idea by later today or tomorrow.  Regardless, this is an historic election.  If there wasn't so much on the line, it could be more enjoyable to watch.

I have already declared myself the winner and The Supremes will back me up.

Why don't the totals match the polls?  Easiest and best answer is that Trump's voters don't all admit their intentions to pollsters, even right-leaning ones like Rasmussen and Gallup.  Notice I didn't say Fox.  They run a pretty neutral polling operation and straight news division.
