2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet

If Kopech and Crochet are actually both on the MLB team to start the year, then they should just use them as a combination starter to build up innings. Rotate which guy starts and which guy comes in relief.  Start with 2 innings each and build up to 4-5 innings for the guy who starts.

If there is no room in the rotation at the start of the year for the "combination starter", then just have both of them come in relief for a couple innings at a time. Eventually we will need another starter, and at that point, you start the rotation of which guy starts.

Could a plan like that actually work?

I mean it could, you've got increased roster spots to do it with, but you're putting your whole team at a comparative disadvantage against the Twins and company if you do because they have a deeper bullpen/bench. It's like an odd version of a bullpen game once every trip through the rotation, except instead of burning the entire bullpen when you do it, you just constantly have one guy you can't use.

1% of Tommy John surgeries have become double surgeries. He should have no limit unless it's service time. Kopech should be throwing 100% all season.

If Michael wants to be a ballplayer, it's time for him to pitch.  Doesn't mean be reckless with him, but it means what you said.

Al’s Beef is really pushing the idea of Kopech beginning the season with the Sox in their bullpen.  That seems like an incredibly stupid idea and I hope it’s baseless speculation.

Based on what I've heard from Hahn, Kopech and Crochet are on the same plan.

I don’t see how they could allow this. If one starter goes down they would then be down to Lopez and whoever else they can pull out of AAA

Not really. They're going to piggyback Kopech and Crochet as a combined starter for 6 innings it seems in that case. He said they're going to use them like the Dodgers use Julio Urias.

Again my point. If one starter goes down they are left with Lopez and AAA guys. Too many pitchers filling a rotation out who combined haven’t thrown 100 innings all together in the last 2 seasons (Rodon, Kopech and Crochet). You need to have patience with these guys and should have signed an Odorizzi or anyone else who has thrown a baseball in the past 2 years type to shore up the back end.

That's why a lot of fans are disappointed about them only going out and getting Lynn and bringing back Rodon this winter. They needed someone more reliable than Rodon to shore up the back end. They really believe in Cease/Kopech/Crochet it seems, but can they really dedicate one spot to two guys like that while trying to win?

It seems like the plan is to run Giolito/Keuchel/Lynn/Cease and mess around with Kopech/Crochet/Lopez/Rodon in the 5th spot.

I'd imagine if Rodon or Lopez are pitching well enough to hold down the 5th spot, then Kopech/Crochet will go to Charlotte to get their innings.

3 innings of Crochet to start, followed by 3 of Kopech every 5th day... good luck hitters.

It looks like what's going to happen is that they want Kopech and Crochet available in August and September, so it may end up that they're kind of running a 6 starter plan.

Giolito

Keuchel

Lynn

Cease

Rodon/Lopez-these guys will start normally or be available out of the bullpen.

Kopech/Crochet-one guy will be an opener for 3+ the other will go 2+, with the goal to get both guys up to 140 innings by the end of the season and have them be available out of the bullpen in October.

So what it looks like is that Rodon/Lopez/Kopech/Crochet will all be 3-4 inning guys that are available both out of the bullpen and they'll all piggyback off of each other based on who has been used when.

And then if all goes to plan (which it never does) you have a 2022 rotation of Giolito, Kuechel, Cease, Kopech, Crochet. Stock that pen up in the offseason.

Right, it never goes to plan.

But anyway, I'd imagine if one of the top 4 guys gets hurt, then either Rodon or Lopez will stretch out to take their spot and Crochet/Kopech and the other guy will piggyback for the other start.

It sounds like they're carrying 14 pitchers and 12 hitters, as this is the only way this stuff makes sense, which means that it may be time for them to give up on Collins if he doesn't show something.

It is a stupid idea, especially since we didn't add any SP depth.

I'm probably one of the few here that like this plan and suggested it a few weeks ago.  Its a smart way to manage Kopech's innings while keeping him relative for most of the season.  All indications are that he's on a pitch/innings limit.  He can long relief or spot start. There will plenty of opportunities for several starts.  If he begins in Charlotte then comes up as starter, its an awkward plan with two windows of alt starters for 1st 6 weeks and especially the last 6 weeks of season.   I suspect the Sox hope for good things from other pitchers, Rodon, Lopez, Stiever, others(?), as 5th starter, evaluate the situation, then act accordingly in a trade.  There are numerous 2022 FA they could trade for (rent) once they know who's having decent seasons on early sellers for affordable cost (prospects/draft picks/cash).   It feels less choppy this way.

They're not running 6 starters with Giolito, Lynn and Keuchel.. They need to go every 5th day.
