The Jarred Kelenic Appreciation Thread

Trammell has never hit above A ball. I would let him hit in the minors and have the superior player in the MLB.

If that’s what the scouts believe, that Trammell won’t hit above low 600s...and that Kelenic’s offense and decent defense (at least in CF) gives you the clear advantage to comprte for a playoff spot this year, it should be more of a no brainer.

So then you’re back to the organizational punishment/doghouse argument for not signing the below perceived value extension.

"Mariners: Julio Rodríguez, OF (No. 2/MLB No. 5)

It took some of us by surprise that the Mariners chose to have Rodríguez start the year in High-A rather than Double-A. But no matter. Look for Rodríguez to use that as more fuel for what already is a huge fire to succeed and hit, mash, rake his way across three levels and up in Seattle, where we’ll finally get to see him play alongside Jarred Kelenic, before the year is over."   source:  mlb.com

And my return point is that Trammell, Haniger and Kyle Lewis are the three starters...for now.

Which one of those guys would you sit?  Perpetual top 30-40 MiLB prospect with untapped potential?  Returning AL Rookie of the Year, coming back into form from injury issues or Mitch Haniger?

And two of those guys are better CFers, so you’re benching a corner...certainly not playing Kelenic in center.

Trammel is hitting .157. Clearly send Trammel down to Triple-A.

Using the Grandal is effective at .121 argument, he is or can be effective in CF or on the basepaths.

Grandal has been 38% better of an offensive contributor and has a 10 year track record. I don't know why you want to put your name next to this argument.

To me, the Mariners aren't realistically expecting to compete against HOU, LAA and Oakland this year...and are targeting the 2023-26 window.

I'm just arguing what the M's front office would argue (defending keeping Kelenic down), just like the Cubs did with Kris Bryant back in the day against Boras Corp.  The other aspect, of course, is leverage over the player himself (for not signing a below market deal, at least from Kelenic and his agent's POV)...of course, the fan base is not necessarily on ownership's side and will be increasingly concerned about spoiling the relationship with the player/franchise before it ever gets off on the right foot.

Look at where the Cubs stand now with Baez and Bryant, for example.  And Contreras, as well, longer-term.

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/how-mariners-top-prospects-like-jarred-kelenic-and-julio-rodriguez-did-over-minor-league-opening-weekends/

Seattle Foodies/Hector Gomez involved, haha?

Contrary to a tweet from a fake Twitter account posing itself as the Mariners PR Twitter account, outfielder Jarred Kelenic and pitcher Logan Gilbert were not called up to the Mariners on Monday.

The tweet fooled plenty of people because they either want the two prized prospects to join the team or think the Mariners could use the infusion of young talent to help a sagging offense and an injury-riddled rotation.

Now, if the person intent on trolling M’s fans and the media had tweeted that Kelenic was being called up Thursday they might have stumbled into a scoop.

Because Monday evening, just 15 minutes after Kelenic led off the bottom of the first with a crisp single for Class AAA Tacoma at Cheney Stadium, ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted that based on a MLB source, the Mariners were going call up Kelenic for the game Thursday against Cleveland at T-Mobile Park.

Major League Baseball sources confirmed Passan’s report. Kelenic won’t accompany the Rainiers to Salt Lake City on Wednesday. Instead, he will remain in Seattle and make his debut Thursday evening.

The decision to call up Kelenic for the game Thursday does fit a logical timeline. Where the bogus tweet missed the standard of logic is with the Mariners having the day off Monday.

Good stuff Caulfield. Watch Trammell be the guy they send down too hah

Haniger just hit two homers off the Dodgers.  Just don’t see why they wouldn’t trade him looking at all his missed time the last 2-3 seasons, age, and the fact that extending players for past production usually doesn’t end well for mid-market teams...look no further than Kyle Seager and his deal.

They totally need to trade Mitch.  It's likely they will hold him too long however and he'll get hurt again.  That's just kinda what they do.

Picked up Logan Gilbert for fantasy, already dinged up tonight.   Got Severino and Wander Franco, too slow on the draw with Kelenic.

Now two runs.  Another welcome to the show, kid!   Seems he's over reliant on his FB, which works in the minors as a starter at 95-98 but not in the majors.  Breaking stuff has been erratic so far.

Jose Ramirez just went deep for #11.

Trade him, ASAP, Indians!!!

No way in hell they can keep their offense afloat without him in the middle of the order.

And maybe we can trick them (with a late night fax) into thinking it's Franklin Reyes and not Franmil that should be on their roster...ala the KW "Barry/Berry" fiasco with LAD.

First K for Kelenic, Plesac pulled the string on him...big league pitchers are going to go out of their way to TRY to put him in his place.  We'll see how quickly the adjustments come.  They're definitely not going to attack with mostly fastballs.

I have found it incredibly annoying how Kelenic coming up has been framed by baseball media as a new york story. Like, I get it, that's a bad trade for them, but that should be the side story here.
