The Jarred Kelenic Appreciation Thread

Kelenic is a pile of garbage in CF. They need to move him ASAP

He's nothing special in a corner either.  His bat looks closer to 250/310/450 long term as well.  Looking quite a bit like a guy that might have some nice 3-5 WAR seasons in his absolute prime (Mitch Hanniger like for a Mariners comp) but that still needs A LOT of development.  Avi is another one perhaps.

Kid's hotter than a rolling ball of butcher knives.  ??

For someone that would continually mock Madrigal for his lack of power, Madrigal has a career OPS of .133 higher than Kelenic in the same number of plate appearances. And apparently Kelenic’s defense is horrendous too. Thought this guy was 5-tool?

Players take time to develop - who would’ve thunk it?

I’m not saying this guy won’t be good but if Sox fans were disappointed with Madrigal I’ve gotta imagine Mariners fans are very disappointed with the early returns on Kelenic.

It’s much too early to speak definitively on either career, but jumping on player promoted at age 21 (post service time manipulation), when most of his peers are in college or low minors, is a bit short sighted.

Kelenic’s OPS the past 28 days (baseball reference default split date (also 7, 14 days) is .809.

Jarred is 2 1/2 years younger than Madrigal, still a huge difference / factor at this stage of their respective development.

Probably the biggest reason this thread exists is because the Sox took Madrigal ahead of him, and Harold hates Madrigal. Kelenic is going to be a good player, but he isn't Mike Trout on steroids like Harold wants you to believe.

Kid took the MVP deeeeeeeeep. He's gonna be a superstar. ??

LOL - The cherry picking in that tweet should net 10-15 years in the slammer.

  • Willie McCovey - Age 21- 52 Games 13 HRs; 1.085 OPS (Rookie of the Year)
  • Mickey Mantle - Age 19 - 96 G; 13 HR; .792 OPS (Age 20 season  - 3rd in MVP voting 23 HRs .924 OPS)
  • Hank Aaron - Age 20 - 122 G (Negro Leagues); 13 HRs, .769 OPS (27/.924 in age 21 season, 44 HRs / .895 OPS first MLB season)
  • Jarred Kelenic - Age 21 - 87 G; 14 HRs, .602 OPS

Harold, you're really pushing it.

At least with Puig in his first two seasons and then Tatis, they put up legit numbers that didn't need to be "massaged" to make reasonable-sounding arguments on behalf of a player.

Obviously we'll never know how the likes of Kelenic and Vaughn (from a White Sox fan perspective) would have had their career trajectories transformed by playing a "normal" 2020 schedule.

But someone will argue perhaps that player never would have been a star regardless, if Covid completely derailed their career/s.  Of course, there are players like Eduardo Rodriguez and Freddie Freeman that are quite fortunate to be alive, for example.
