Not to mention the ill-fated Alex Gordon deal only $1 million behind Grandal’s...personally, this move feels like the last one the Sox gave to Konerko.  It won’t end well due to his size and injury history.   Mostly at 1B/DH.

  • 2021: $13 million (part of previous contract)
  • 2022: $18 million
  • 2023: $20 million
  • 2024: $20 million
  • 2025: $22 million
  • 2026: $13.5 million club option ($2 million buyout)

With $82 million in new money, Perez's extension is the largest contract in Royals history, surpassing the four-year contract worth $72 million the club gave Alex Gordon in 2016. The $20.5 million average annual value makes this the third-richest catching contract in history, trailing only J.T. Realmuto ($23.1 million) and Joe Mauer ($23 million).

Agreed,  1 1/2 younger than Grandal but deal ends at the same age. Carlton Fisk is the only over 30 year old catcher I can recall continuing great production after 30, primarily because his extreme dedication to keeping in shape. Of course the Sox repaid him by cutting him on the road, and cutting off clubhouse access so he had to say goodbye from the left field seats because Jerry "Family" atmosphere.

Never heard of Yadier Molina?

Look at his production before and after, 2014 was his one solid year after age 31, the only season with a bWAR above 1.8, He was a consistent above 3 bWAR before then with a 6.2 / 7.2 highlight seasons. The action on your knees gets to you after so many games. Molina got $60M his last deal before this year, averaged 1.3 bWAR.

People here were crowing Grandal catching 120 easy, and I don't see him catching much beyond 100 ever again, despite what he was able to do in his 20s. His bat will likely drop off as well, just gravity and time at work. Same with Perez, same with Mauer and Posey and just about anyone else who played the game at a high level in their 20s.

He doesn't know who Ivan Rodriguez or Yogi Berra are either, evidently.

I-Rod is a tough argument to make with all the steroids accusations.

Fisk and Posada are the two arguments for catchers peaking around age 30 and doing well into their 30's/40's.  Of course, Posada was also right in the middle of the steroids era.

Elston Howard, Piazza (mostly from offense/steroids again) and Gary Carter are the only others over 21 fWAR in their 30's, with I-Rod #6 at 21.3.

Posada at 32.5, Fisk at 39.5, the obvious anomaly or outlier in the group.

More failed trolling. Can't comprehend "just about anyone else", oblivious to the fact both had significant declines in WAR.

  • Berra: 5 WAR player through age 31, under 3 WAR player his final five full time seasons (discarding the last two)
  • I-Roid after his deal with Detroit, also at age 31 (consistent 5-6 WAR before, averaged under 3 WAR), with or without steroids.

Just proves the point further that paying catchers (and most players) for performance they achieved in their 20s into their 30s with multi year contracts is a fools errand. Enter Rick Hahn with a big December announcement.
