GT 7/1 Twins @ White Sox 1:10 PM CDT

Recommended Posts

The White Sox slaughter of the Twins last night put them a whooping 13 1/2 games up on the Twins in the Central Division. It also puts the Sox at 7-1 on the season vs. the Twins.

The Sox have got incredible contributions all year from unexpected sources that have been forced into action by  injuries. This continued last night as Gavin Sheets, Brian Goodwin and Andrew Vaughn all homered in the 13-3 rout. Vaughn also singled and drove in 3 runs. Sheets HR was the 1st of his career in only his 2nd game.

Yasmani Grandal continued his torrid June by hitting 2 HR's and driving in 5 runs. He now has 14 HR's on the season to lead the Sox. Jose Abreu also homered to give the Sox a season high of 6 in a game after only homering 5 times in the last 10 games.

As far as a response to the Josh Donaldson /Lucas Giolito controversy goes, the Sox let their bats do the talking. The crowd was thrilled to see Cease strike out Donaldson twice after he initially homered in the 1st inning amid a chorus of boos.

The Sox have won 3 in a row and look to thrust a dagger into the Twins today in the final game of the series.

Today's daytime action will feature RH Jose Berrios 7 - 2  3.42 ERA vs.  LH Carlos Rodon 6-3  2.06 ERA

LET'S GO !

Looking at the following projected lineup, which may have more replacements than normal due to the day game following the night game, new recent arrivals, and injured player availability (Yoan, Abreu, Hamilton) after the quick turnaround.

  1. SS Tim Anderson
  2. 3B Yoan Moncada # (Could be the biggest lineup "wild card" due to his "barking" shoulder)
  3. DH Jose Abreu (Hoping Tony gives him a day rest at 1B due to the quick game turnaround)
  4. 1B Yasmani Grandal # (expecting him to DH if Jose plays 1B)
  5. CF Brian Goodwin ^ (A liability in CF, but Hamilton still banged up)
  6. RF Gavin Sheets ^ (Stick with the hot bat, at least until the th/8th for a defensive replacement)
  7. LF Andrew Vaughn (Tony may give him a day off against a tough righty, but you gotta face them at some point and he is playing great this week)
  8. C Zach Collins ^ (That's right, Rodon is on the mound and he has been hitting well)
  9. 2B Danny Mendick (Tony may continue with Leury, but I think he gives him a day off after being banged up a bit and playing everyday since. Couldn't take him out yesterday since Tony gave Tim Anderson a breather, which made sense).

What the Twins must fear is the Pale Hose settling in as kings of the AL Central. The rivalry blossomed from 2001 to 2020 as the Twins won 14 season series while losing three and splitting three. Torii Hunter is hated by Sox fans to this day for steamrolling catcher Jamie Burke in 2004. Across the diamond, Mark Buehrle was a pain in the Twins' sides for years, and Jim Thome's home run off Nick Blackburn was the only run in Game 163 in 2008. While the Twins missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons in the 2010s, they were still edging the White Sox during the season.

Although the Twins are the two-time defending AL Central champions, the White Sox have been working to unseat them. They traded Chris Sale for Michael Kopech and Joan Moncada. They dealt Adam Eaton for Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning, then dealt Dunning for Lance Lynn. Dylan Cease and Eloy Jimenez came in a deal with the Cubs. Free agency has landed Dallas Keuchel, Liam Hendriks and others.

Chicago is built to last. Cleveland, who must have a pumpkin patch they harvest pitchers out of, will remain relevant. The Twins feel they have a core they can move forward with, but have long term questions about their rotation depth.

How will the Twins respond? So far, the only thing that has happened this season is that Donaldson has replaced Hunter on the most hated Twin list.

The Twins are toast, no matter who wins this afternoon. Their pitching is not good enough to get them on a sustained wining streak.  That means they will be sellers looking to dump salary.  If they could unload Donaldson's contract he would be one of the first to go.

They can't.  And Twins ownership is every bit of stingy as Reinsdorf, and they will not eat anything to do it.  I would love to see the Twins trade Berrios.  That hurts them in 2022 and the chances whoever they acquire in that deal turns into as good a player as Berrios is at best a coinflip.

I see Tony is now following me on SoxTalk. Glad I could help.

TBH this game hardly matters.

Going into this series I was hoping for a split with how bad we were playing and the twins bats coming alive.

Winning the first 2 has been so sweet. That was pretty much the nail in the twins coffin.

If we win this? That's a big momentum boost that we needed and effectively ends the twinkies.

If we lose? Oh well, we won the series 2-1 at a time that we were very, very weak.

Way to go! Let's have a fun day.

Indians have a huge series with four at home against the suddenly struggling Astros…btw, Oakland looking to add Story and/or Nelson Cruz to compete with them as well.

3 firstbasemen in the lineup and it's Grandal playing first today. Not complaining, that's what I'd do too but it's funny.

I really need Jake Burger at 2B in this lineup to complete the hilarity.

Yeah, the trade deadline will be very interesting.

Last year our white sox didn't make the big trade and it might have cost them in the playoffs.

Let's see if we can switch it up this year and add big. Other teams will be adding.
