South Side Hit Men
Even if you wave a magic wand and somehow Eloy improves from atrocious to bad in LF, the dual consideration is he cannot stay healthy. Eloy has a great bat. He sucks and adds no value as a fielder and is prone to injury. It behooves the team to keep him permanently at DH, to maximize the number of times Eloy can be healthy enough to bat in a White Sox uniform. 4/26/19 - Eloy Jimenez suffers a high ankle sprain attempting to play Left Field. Eloy is placed on IR, returned 5/20 7/16/19 - Eloy collides with Charlie Tilson attempting to play Left Field. Eloy suffers a right ulnar nerve contusion and is placed on IR, returned 7/28 7/26/20 - Eloy Jimenez attacks the wall in Left Field with his head and losses that battle. Eloy avoids IR, returned 7/29 8/25/20 - Eloy Jimenez twisted his ankle attempting to preserve celebrating Lucas Giolito's no hitter. Returned 8/27 9/24/20 - Eloy sprained his foot attempting to run the bases. Missed the remainder of the regular season and all but two at bats in the postseason. 3/23/21 - Eloy Jimenez tears his pectoral tendon, attempting to catch a ball 10 feet over the LF wall. Eloy is placed on the 60 Day IR, misses the first four + months of the season. Edited July 5, 2021 by South Side Hit Men 2
tray
Your list includes 6 injuries. It looks like first four kept Eloy out what...anywhere from 3 days to 30 days ? Those appear to be the types of maladies commonly faced by other major league players, especially this year. The May 2020 ankle sprain was characterized by you as "attempting to play Left Field." To be fair and accurate, Eloy made a leaping attempt to catch a home-run ball in the April 26, 2020 game against the Detroit Tigers. In the process, his foot got stuck in the padding of the left-field wall . He returned three weeks later. The fifth injury was September 24, 2020, and was a mid ankle sprain that caused Eloy to miss the last series of the season against the Cubs. The minor ankle sprain had nothing to do with playing in the outfield, but instead happened as Eloy was attempting to score. You further embellish your self-serving list with a 2 day ankle twist celebrating Gio's no hitter. Again , nothing to do with playing the outfield. I see arguments like this from friends and relatives who incessantly parrot political talking points from a news source that traffics in half-truths. They are riddled with spin and largely unpersuasive, as is your argument. Once again, Eloy, at 24 years old, will not agree to become the permanent DH as you suggest...not with the WSox or any other team for the next several years. The last permanent DH for the White Sox was Yermin Mercedes. Note that after a protracted hitting slump Yermin started to get a few hits. Nevertheless, Yermin was summarily removed from the major league 26 man roster by Rick Hahn who explained that the WSox needed more "positional flexibility." Edited to add: Permanent DH? What a great plan for a young man like Eloy to maintain his weight and remain in good physical condition. South Side Hit Men
LOLz. Players getting hurt jumping up and down after a ball game, yes common "maladies", Not going to bother sifting through all of that nonsense, I'll break it down so that even you can understand. The Chicago White Sox dictate where Eloy will play, not Eloy. Rick Hahn stated they will make the determination of future playing time, not Eloy. Eloy has been on the roster for 305 games. He has already missed 128 games and counting, or over 40%, all but a couple due to the fact THAT HE WAS/IS and will ALWAYS BE INJURED attempting to do something he cannot, play Left Field. You once attributed it to "Baby Fat". It's not Baby Fat. It's due to the fact that he is physically and mentally unable to field the outfield position. Let's see if these videos uncover whether Eloy has any ability to field his position, or stay healthy, playing LF. 1:55 Watch this fine approach of Eloy, unaware of his surroundings as he Kung Fu kicks the LF wall pursuing an uncatchable HR (it's Eloy's signature play). https://www.mlb.com/video/cg-det-cws-4-26-19 0:49 Eloy Jimenez, no awareness of the warning track or wall, in his home park, before headbutting the wall on, wait for it, another ball over the fence. 2:20 Too dizzy to track a ball hit to LF (in lands behind him, Robert retrieved it for him. Eloy is then pulled from the game, played on the DL. Eloy caught by Spider Man. 167 games of A. Ignoring the CFer calling him off, B. Closes his eyes and puts his head down and reaches out for the ball, pathetic technique. https://www.mlb.com/video/jimenez-leaves-with-arm-injury Same as it ever was, same as it ever was. Another jackass attempt at an uncatchable ball, this time in a meaningless exhibition. Edited July 5, 2021 by South Side Hit Men

However, 95% of catches he makes that are not on that video are routine fly balls hit in the vicinity where he is set up. I don't think Eloy has to improve his defense greatly. He just has to stay under control - play deep and let balls hit in front of him fall in for base hits, like Vaughn does. Don't slide and dive, jump in the net to catch a foul ball or reach over the fence to rob a home run. Staying within himself is the key - do not try to do to much in order to impress people that he is a gold glove outfielder. In the meantime, Vaughn should continue to play deep and play conservatively to avoid injury. Neither of them is in the outfield because of their defense. Yet Vaughn is statistically an average defensive LF. Eloy is... let's just say not.

The only way I want Eloy to play left field again is if they can put one of those electric dog collars on him and then someone on the bench can zap him if he wanders somewhere he shouldn't be lol. CentralChamps21
I don't want to see him out in LF once he gets back this season, but he's a very good athlete and I have to think that if he gets some specialized instruction during the off-season, he can improve at that position. That's one advantage he has over Vaughn, with speed limiting how much he can get to no matter how good his fundamentals are.

I have no doubt that Eloy will not be a full time DH next year, but he should be on a rotation to limit his chances at injury. Imo, it will be a great rotation to keep bats sharp and legs fresh: Eloy- LF/DH Vaughn- LF/1st/DH Jose- DH/1st Burger can fill the Lamb role and Sheets (if he proves he can handle RF) can get in the rotation RF/1st/DH

I have a friend who is a die-hard Cub fan who was quick to react to Eloy's fluke injury (reaching over the wall to bring back a home run.) He said, " that is it, he is now just a career DH." He seemed to be excited about that possibility.
