Sox don't have much in the meaningful department to offer.  So if they can get a deal done, pull the trigger.

With the Rockies not having a GM and looking at the Arenado deal, they might have what it takes to pull it off. I'd be shocked if it happened though.

What's interesting about a possible Story acquisition is that he's a better defensive SS than TA. There's no way we move TA to 2B...right?

No way in hell they move TA to 2B. First of all, Story isn't a better SS. TA in '21 is 0.979 and Story is 0.976. Secondly, TA is the key motivator and vocal leader on this team. TA would be pissed and fight it. Not even the senile TLR, would make such a stupid decision like that. We don't need Story. 2B is a problem, but it's not worth giving up so many good future prospects, it would take, for a half year rental and seeing him walk in 2022 as a FA. Garcia is improving and up to .251 and plays a solid 2B. Thirdly, we will have Madrigal back in 2022. The juice isn't worth the squeeze on Story.

Are we really using fielding percentage to grade defense now? Story has been one of the best defensive SS in baseball by just about any defensive metric over the past 5 years: UZR, DRS, OAA, pretty much anything besides fielding percentage. He was even a gold glove finalist in 2019. While Tim has improved a lot on defense this year, he's not in the same league as Story. If anything, defense is still TA's biggest flaw in his game.

Story is hitting .184 away from Coors this year. No thanks.

Story has a higher wRC+ on the road in his career than TA does.

No way a Story deal happens.

COL expects to both replace and upgrade over the value of the draft pick they will get after offering a QO with Story rejecting it *and* they will expect to take the deal of the highest bidder/best centerpiece most likely among bidders.  On the Sox side (and everyone else's side) there is the fact that a midseason deal eliminates the possibility of offering the QO and recouping a draft pick, so there's no second year or any compensation when he leaves in FA.

So in essence Story costs a shit ton more than someone like Escobar and Schoop and probably similar to Frasier or maybe a tad less but then there's no second season.

So no.  It's not happening.  Unless the Sox are willing to take on a bunch of money along with it in a package deal ie Blackmon which again means no.

IMO Ketel Marte is a more realistic target than Story.

My opinion is we'll get Escobar or maybe someone like Schoop who won't or can't get a QO and is merely a rental.

The Rockies are facing opportunity cost. Keeping Story to allow to recoup the comp pick doesn't come without cost.

The Rockies owe him roughly 9 million for the remainder of the season. The slot value of the 31-34th pick in the draft draft is roughly 3.3M. So if the Rockies keep Story and get the comp pick, it will cost them about 12.3M in signing bonuses and opportunity cost of paying a guy 9 million to play 80 games for an awful team going nowhere.

On the other hand, they can trade him and pick up three prospects that they would either pay minor league salaries or the major league minimum. They can get multiple prospects instead of putting their eggs in one basket. They could get AAA guys who have less risk associated to them, they could get A ball guys that may have more upside, etc. They could get a mix of the two all the while saving money.

Who is running the Rockies right now? They fired their GM mid-season. Their owner just gave 50 million to the Cardinals. It's unclear (I believe the info is not public) whether they gave out 50m this year or whether it is spread. But who is more likely to make a move that saves the team money? A GM who wants to build a winner or ownership? Who is making the call?

Who is a contender and in need of a shortstop let alone a middle infielder? The A's? They said they're not interested. The Red Sox could possibly upgrade at 2B. Who else? Maybe the Dodgers if Seager is going to be out for a long time.

My point - the Sox should have limited competition, the Rockies owner may value 3 diversified prospects and 13 million savings over one comp pick. Away from Gallo, there may no other bat as impactful on the market for the Sox.

I think he would be a wonderful add for second base

His career road split is a .750 OPS which I would gladly take over Mendick and Garcia right now, If the price is right of course

Does anyone else feel like if they pulled the trigger on Story, they should move Anderson to 2B? You get the most value out of him as a rental at SS as, from what I've read, he's the better defender.

Nah.  If Story is a rental, there is zero chance you f with the face of the franchise to do it.

I'd never thought I'd see the day where Trevor Story isn't needed on the White Sox because Leury Garcia has now got his batting average up to .251.

If he’s a team leader, then he wouldn’t fight it. Don’t think resisting the plans of his superiors and causing disorder among the team would generally be considered leadership
