He is and the tools are among the best in the country but he has a couple things working against him. He has an unorthodox swing, he doesn't have a long history of performance and he didn't play in a power conference. He's going to the combine and if he shows like I think he will he'll be in the 1st round conversation for a lot of teams. My comp for him is Aaron Rowand. The tools are special. Harold's Leg Lift
Drew Gilbert got run last night for MF'ing the ump after a strike call (and it wasn't even strike 3) and last week Jordan Beck flipped off the centerfielder after hitting a ball over his head. I love guys who play with an edge but these too are habitual line steppers and I'm starting to think it could cost them in the draft. daa84
Words can’t describe how happy I am to see UT bounced. Certainly one of the best regular season teams I’ve ever seen, but without a doubt the most obnoxious, classless team I’ve ever witnessed. From a personal standpoint I want nothing to do with Drew Gilbert in the Sox system

I think the arrival of Davis Martin along with Burke, Vera and Mena puts them in a spot where they should double up on prep hitters again and then overslot a college starter in the 3rd again. We’ll see though. Probably depends on the board.
dasox24
Absolutely love Drew Gilbert, but he needs to clean up some mental lapses on the base paths - was an issue a few times this year. Otherwise, he does everything else really well and the kind of player who is loved by fans/teammates, and despised by every other fan base. He's AJ Pierzynski. While he didn't come through at all today (which shocked me, but it felt like he was pressing to make up for getting ejected on Friday/missing Saturday's game), for his career in general, he showed up in big moments. The biggest being last year's regional - he hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th when Tennessee was down 3 runs. He's a guy I would never bet against. Also one of the biggest 180's you'll see in a player's personality from off the field vs. on the field. Goes from incredibly friendly, polite kid to absolute madman when he steps on the field. Last year, the Sox drafted Colson Montgomery and paid slot slot. They successfully floated Wes Kath to the 2nd round by paying him $1.8 million. In the 3rd, they took Sean Burke and paid him $900K which was overslot but the price to get him there. They went under in the 4th and 6-10 so they could draft McDougal in round 5 and paid him $850K. Just kind of how the rules work

The Sox drafted Burke basically where he was ranked; that shouldn't require overslot it seems to me. And even if he were ranked, say, #50 and he fell to the Sox in the 3rd, what choice would he have had but to sign? A few years ago the Sox paid Sheets as a 3-year college player. Paid him overslot for some reason. Edited June 14, 2022 by GreenSox
