As previously mentioned, the Twins are extremely unlikely to trade Buxton and/or Berrios.  The impending FA will all be moved if possible.

Berrios would ONLY make sense (to move this year at the deadline) to an all in/win now team with a lesser payroll (think Rays, A’s, Brewers) who had the prospects to deal and the willingness to take a risk to put themselves over the top, but not much likelihood of being able to afford the 6 year, $150ish extension.

Padres also come to mind, because of all the question marks around Lamet, Paddack and Snell…could see a deal with Berrios and Rogers moving together.  They have the easiest schedule remaining and desperately are going to want to avoid that sudden death wild card game with SFG or LAD.

90% of the time, these big moves happen over the offseason.

Yeah.  Twins aren't punting 2022 and the FO thinks they can re-tool and be a contender in 22.  Trading Buxton and/or Berrios wouldn't really jive with that thought.

Donaldson’s deal and then keeping Cruz at $13-15 million for next year are really hampering their financial flexibility.

In my mind, they want to keep at least one of those guys and go all in on 2022 again, or they pretty much have to blow the whole thing up.

They have complementary pieces like Arraez, Kepler, Sano and Polanco from the first wave that they have to connect to the second with Kiriloff, Larnach, etc.  Just like with Eddie Rosario, they will have to part ways with Kepler, Sano or both as they get more expensive and play their way out of the long term plans.

Most importantly, they need to solidify spots 3-5 in the rotation, and the internal options are just not developing as quickly as needed, which necessitates more FA spending to cover for the losses of Berrios and Pineda.

Unless that 7 year $70 million deal included opt outs after the first 2 years, there's no way Buxton would accept that deal. Even $10 million a year is a lowball offer for him after the first year or 2.

Why would Semien be added to the market?  Are the Blue Jays actually going to sell while being out 4 games?

The same reason the Yankees are not buyers…and because they might be able to get a better return for him now than letting him walk at the end of the season.  Or they might think adding young pitching gives them the best shot this year and into the future.  Or uncertainty about the compensation system.  Semien and Hendriks didn’t get QO’s last year from Oakland, so he could get one this year…if you’re Toronto, do you really think you have enough to get past Oakland (who will certainly make a trade), NYY, Seattle, Cleveland (assuming Bieber comes back), etc.   Playing in the AL East?   Also depends on their revenue projections…having sacrificed attendance all season long to play in the US.

The White Sox were only behind 3 1/2 for a division title in 1997…let alone a one shot WC game that’s a crapshoot just to get through to play it in the first place.
