I think there is a real chance that Rodon plays next year on a short term deal or a deal that has an opt out. If he has 2 straight 6 WAR seasons and is still hitting FA in his 20s, he would have a very convincing case that he was over his injuries and deserved a contract comparable to the top pitchers in the league. Plus, he could get through the QO year, if such a thing remains.

Some team may be desperate enough for pitching to overpay Rodon, but I do think the extensive injury history and short track record of elite performance will give most clubs pause on a big money deal.

Sox best bet is to offer the QO and see how things play out

Remember when NBC ran with the "Best Rotation ever??"/5 Aces thing when the Cubs had Darvish, Hendriks, Quintana etc..?

Kinda funny that a team we all came into the season thinking there probably isn't enough pitching, may very well be the best rotation in the last twenty years.

Okay 2005 Sox:

Buehrle 16-8 3.12

Contreras 15-7 3.61

Freddy Garcia 14-8 3.87

Garland 18-10 3.50

El Duque 9-9 5.12 / Brandon McCarthy 3-2 4.03

2021 White Sox

Rodon 8-3 2.14

Lynn 9-3 1.99

Giolito 8-6 3.90

Cease 7-5 4.15

Keuchel 7-3 4.25

I like 2021 better at the top and bottom. Freddy and Garland maybe slightly better than Lucas and Cease, but I actually think that's a push.

Different times.  Wasn't that the tail ending of the Steroid era?  The 05 staff could throw a lot more innings as well.  I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you by the way.

Would be interested to see these as ERA+

2005
Buehrle 144

Garcia 116

Garland 128

Contreras 125

Hernandez 88

2021

Rodon 199

Lynn 215

Giolito 109

Cease 103

Keuchel 100

I'd say 2005 was 4 guys that were great, but nowhere near as dominant as someone like Rodon has been. This year's rotation is definitely more top heavy. There's also the question of just how durable this group is given Rodon's lack of innings in his career.

There’s more context missing.

Contreras was THE best pitcher in baseball the last two months of 2005 through the playoffs and into late May, 2006, when he got hurt on the Astroturf in Cincy.

Rodon’s arguably at the same level now, but will he maintain it through the last two months and into October?

We can compare guys like Freddy Garcia and Garland to Dylan Cease in a vacuum, but simply no way any Sox fan would choose Cease for a playoff start.   Now if you talk about adding Kopech into the mix, it gets a lot more interesting.

Or if Giolito can keep that 95-96, touching 97 or even an occasional 98 velocity that he had for extended stretches of 2019 and 20.
