Just watched one my favorite Olympic moments from this year....3 guys were pushing at the end of the Marathon for Silver and Bronze.  As the guy in 3rd place started to go into his final kick he kept looking back encouraging the guy in 4th to come with him to get a medal...they both did and embraced at the finish line medalists from Nerherlands and Belgium....outstanding.

They are friends from European racing circuit and wanted Europe to get 2 medals. It was awesome to watch.  I was surprised he continued to do it even with 800 left .

Just completely destroyed Brazil that whole match.  Was never really particularly competitive.

And USA finishes with most golds, most silver and most bronze.  Despite a number of disappointments before and after the games the USA still finishes on top.

The men's track only getting 1 gold is a massive upset and disappointment.

Thanks for the background on that...it truly was wonderful to see.

Yep.  Had 4 world champions in the sprints at 2019 world championships but Coleman suspended, Brazier banged up so didn’t make team, Holloway blew a big late lead and Lyles just wasn’t quite the same guy this year.  The sprinters that made team are actually really young though so I’d expect them to be set up really well in 2024.

US wins the medal count mostly on the backs of the women.

Basketball - Gold

Soccer - Bronze

Volleyball - Gold

Water Polo - Gold

3 on 3 basketball, beach volleyball….two more golds

USA competitive niche right now is definitely here, NCAA scholarships and Title 9 funding.

The most stunning were the 400m hurdles with 22 year old McLaughlin getting gold with a world record and Muhammad getting silver. Also 19 year old Mu getting Gold in the 800 (saw her at an NCAA meeting this year). Imagine what she'll do without a full NCAA season to deal with.

Then these three with Felix blew everyone away and in the 4×4. USATF is in good hands for the next couple of Olympics.

The demise of USA men's basketball has been greatly exaggerated.

It's funny how high the standards are for them. They can't just win a gold, they have to absolutely dog walk every opponent all the way through by at least 30 points or it doesn't really count.

There were 50 more US women competing than men in this Olympics.

I would hope that they'd have more medals.

There will never be a Dream Team with a massive competitive advantage again.

The world is joining the NBA more and more every year.

The expectations will always be high though, because "we" invented the game.

Do you know where this difference is coming from? It would be interesting as most sports have men and women separate except for things like fencing and Equestrian and in those the women beat the men in qualifying for the team.

The soccer team is probably half that number.

Normal international soccer tournaments have 23 player rosters. Not sure if they Olympics is the same.

Women qualified for basketball 3x3 and men didn't so that's 4 more.

There must have been a few sports where the women qualified the max number of individuals and the men didn't

Didn't watch one second of the Olympics. Saw some highlights on social media. Did read about what was happening.

Favorite athlete: Tamyra Mensah-Stock, female wrestling, born in Chicago now lives in Texas. Unabashed joy after winning while wearing the flag. Magnetic smile and personality. NBC woulda been smart to make her the face/main story of the Games.

Also my favorite athlete runnerup: Kevin Durant, men's basketball, unabashed joy after winning gold. True leader of team making sure team won. Wasn't the greatest team but came a long way in a short period of time. Nobody ever said it would be easy all the time.

Also fave athletes honorable mention: Sydney McLaughlin-Dalilah Muhammad going 1-2 in hurdles. Unabashed joy and patriotism exhibited after phenomenal race.

Historically low TV ratings for Olympics. With so few cities bidding for the games, talk they will soon be extinct. Hard to imagine teams not boycotting the China winter games. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-08-09/15-5-million-viewers-nbc-tokyo-games-least-watched-olympics-ever

Having the Olympics events occurring almost entirely between 8pm and 10am EDT is going to produce very low ratings, especially in this electronic age where it's really hard not to find out results before they air in prime time. 2022 in China will have the same problem. 2024 in France will be better as the live window will be 3am to 5pm EDT.
