Shirley on the Draft via the Athletic

Just an excellent set of insights. I really like Shirley - so please please don't suck at your evals. He's a fantastic interview, and really helpful in explaining things like why them talking about athleticism matters.

Here's an excerpt I liked:

Quote

These are necessary elements for any high-level hitter, but Kath draws skepticism from rival scouts for lacking premium bat speed. Shirley counters that while the Sox would love to simply acquire Luis Robert’s tools every single time, the approach and timing is part of what makes that attribute unnecessary for Kath’s profile. And despite not seeing him against college competition, the Sox feel like they’ve seen enough of Kath against breaking balls to know about the fundamentals of his decision-making as a hitter.

“His operation works pretty easy, he probably has a different skill set with his eyes, his instincts to be on time, allow him not to use a lot of effort,” Shirley said. “If guys who can deliver the barrel, who have this unique bat control, who efficiently show you in BP they can do it, they show you in a game to do it. Because some of us have unique ability to be on time and make pitch decisions. I think those are the questions now. Does he have more bat speed than he probably physically shows? Yeah, but you’re gonna have to ask him to get into more effort to do it. And I don’t think that’s what Wes is about.”

That's really interesting! And sox are right or wrong, so really like getting that point of view.

Eno Sarris and Matt Eddy talked for a couple minutes about the White Sox on how they are still on the bottom with player development. Interesting comments by both. Mentioned how they have improved their analytical department, but still behind everyone else. Scouting department is a strength.

Kath he wasn't a consensus first round talent (to some, not even a 2nd round talent).  So why pay him overslot?  If they think he's really a first round talent (while few others do) then that's their premium.  Same with the 3rd round pick.

As for rounds 5-10, they've had more success in those rounds than they've had in the 2nd (which is none in the last 20+ years, Sheets and the recent picks TBD).

Rankin and I had Josh Norris on yesterday and he said the White Sox system is pretty firmly at #30 right now but for all the right reasons haha

They paid Kath like the 40th best player in the class and that's right in line with his talent level. Sean Burke was ranked in the top 60 by some publications so giving him $900K was necessary to slide him to #94. The strategy was fine.

Knight's comments all over the AAP board are downright depressing and reinforce that #30.
