Hankins has really been swinging the bat well ever since he's been promoted to Charlotte. I hope he can keep it up.

Miles will never be able to hold himself at the major league level because of his refusal to draw walks. Players like him need to do all the little things right and in Miles case he has a lot of trouble getting on base, other then with the hit.

I know he's hit in AA, AAA but his avg isn't gonna be incredibly high in the majors and when you can't draw walks to get yourself on base, its gonna be tough to make it when the odds are already against you.

Its really great seeing Hankins hit up a storm. I wonder how he's adjusting to catching. Also great to see Cotts control improving. He's pitching in a tough enviornment.

Seems like Majewski is regressing bigtime right now...and I too don't believe that Miles will ever really be a MLB quality player, just one of those good stories you hear about in the Minor Leagues. Kinda like the one I always remember....

in 1992 the Greenville Braves, my local team, were in the Southern League Playoffs after completing a 100-43 season, best in AA in quite sometime, maybe ever. They had a pitcher named Mike Hostetler. Grady Little was the manager...YES, that Grady Little. Hostetler went out in the PLayoffs and threw a no-hitter that got the G-Braves to the Championship series.

Earlier that year, a friend and I drove to Birmingham from Anderson,SC....why? to see the one and only Dan Pasqua who was on a rehab assignment there. After the game, we stopped to get gas and whos in there? Grady Little. He knew us from Greenville(I went to EVERY home game from 1992-1994). He asked us if we drove all the way down to see the baseball game, and saked if we were headed back. Unfortunately we had to go back. He asked us if we wanted to stay at the team hotel, they had some open rooms due to players that were hurt that didn't make the trip.

Sorry if I rambled on, just rehashing some of the Minor League memories I have, and I have LOTS more.

I think the deal with Majewski is they're trying to determine whether or not to put him on the 40-man. He got left off last year and got picked in the Rule 5. Ultimately didn't stick in the bigs out of spring training and the Sox grabbed him back, he's a Ken Williams favorite, KW likes his competitiveness. I saw KW at the ballpark and asked about Majewski, he said Gary's biggest issue is pitch to pitch focus.

Getting knocked around in the fall league doesn't help his chances of being added to the 40 man. I'd like to see him get a shot too, but we need guys who can consistently perform vs. inconsistency.

We've got enough inconsistent pitchers already :lolhitting

Like Ginter (a major myster), Rauch (another one), Brian West and Malone.

Good arms who have stalled in the minors for a variety of reasons.

We need somebody from the system to step forward and deliver.

With Hankins, offense is nice, but I wonder if he has any potential as a catcher.

No way he could be ready for the bigs. But we need to know if he can make it eventually.

The main numbers I'm watching for Cottsy is the all-important K/BB ratio. I would love to see it at 3:1, hell, I'll even take 2:1 for starters.

That ratio can be deceiving and doesn't tell all. His K:BB ratio in Birmimingham was 2.37:1.

A better ratio to check would be BB/IP.

You're certainly correct. The BB/IP ratio is most important.

The K/BB is somewhat irrelevant, because if a guy strikes out a lot of guys but is wild, he's not going to be very effective.

To expand on your thought...... If a guy walks a lot and strikes out a lot at the Major League level, then he certainly can be effective (see Kerry Wood). Would he be better if he walked less? Yes if he could maintain his high strikeout level, but that may not be the case.

The key is, Cotts hasn't shown he can strike out 1.22 batters per 9 innings in the Big Leagues. More walks give a pitcher less margin for error. Conversely, more strikeouts give a pitcher more margin for error.

But when evaluating a young pitcher, you certainly don't want to bank on a high strikeout rate in the Majors. If it happens, great, but it is not likely to be as high as in the Minors.

Well I guess I should have stated that in Cotts's case it's not as important and I don't think he's comparable to Kerry Wood. He's never going to strike out as many guys as Wood will. Wood is an exception for being effectively wild. There certainly aren't many guys like him.

If you look at the top 10 in walks for the AL this season, here are the names. Judging my standards of who's effective and who's not, I see more pitchers who I would consider not effective than effective, but not by much. Certainly many of these guys would have had better overall seasons with fewer walks. Good points though Rex.

ya Hankins has been really impressive. Now that they've moved him to catcher, any chance we'll see a Olivo and Hankins/Rivera combo, or will we sign Sandy again? And Reed is continuing to impress. I bet we see a Reed/Rowand/Borchard/Harris battle in ST for the CF spot

Sandy is gonna be in this organization one way or another next year. The only question is whether its as a player or a coach.
