South Side Hit Men
At least one National League team is assured of setting the National League record for the most pitchers used in League history. Several teams in MLB have a chance to beat the all time record of 42 pitchers used. Barring a change in roster composition, and assuming implementation of the DH in the NL next season, this is the final year NL teams have a chance at breaking the all time record for batters in a season. South Side Hit Men
Updates since Sunday: Former Chicago White Sox Trayce Thompson became the 50th Chicago Cub to bat this season, after being called up on September 14th. Trayce had his first at bat on September 16th, and got his first start on September 19th, hitting a home run to put the Cubs ahead 1-0 in a game they won 6-4. It was his first in the major league home run since May 3, 2018, when he hit one for the Chicago White Sox in a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. Tony would have a 20 + reliever bullpen now, a pitching change for each change in hitter stance (Lefty to Righty to Lefty). Five hour games, more concession sales. Well, if Jerry were willing to foot the bill, which will come due with the Kimbrel $16m setup nonsense assuming Tony can manage to manage beyond this season. South Side Hit Men
On September 24, 2021, the Baltimore Orioles tied the 2019 Seattle Mariners by playing their 42nd pitcher during a single season, tying the American League and Major League records. The Orioles claimed Joey Krehbiel on waivers off of the Tampa Bay Rays, and called him up before the game last night. Joey entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, with the Orioles clinging to a 4-3 lead. Joey gave up a single to right field by Isiah Kiner-Falefa before retiring Andy Ibanez to end the inning. Joey retired Adolis Garcia on a ground out to third to start the eighth inning before being replaced by Cole Sulser, earning a hold for the evening, The Orioles ended up scoring one in the eighth for a 5-3 lead, before giving up 5 runs in the top of the 9th to lose 8-5. The Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs crept one game closer to the record. Joe Madden brought in AJ Ramos for his first Major League appearance of the season., AJ was called up on Thursday, and pitched the final two innings of the Angels 6-5 loss, recording a strikeout and not allowing a baserunner during his 18 pitch outing. Meanwhile, Joe's former player David Ross brought in shortstop Sergio Alcantara to record the Cubs final out in their 12-4 Game 2 loss to the Cardinals. Those are the three updates since Wednesday. South Side Hit Men
If you have Noah Syndergaard as the 42nd pitcher used by the Mets this season on your bingo card, congratulations. The New York Mets paid Noah Syndergaard $9.7M this season to serve as the opener of tonight's meaningless game against the Miami Marlins. Both teams have locked in losing seasons. Noah recorded two strikeouts, 9 strikes and 1 ball, in one inning served. Hand picked up the win after pitching the top of the 9th, after the Mets scored one after James McCann reached on a fielder's choice and plated Javier Baez after Anthony Bass failed to field his slow roller. All other teams on the previous leaderboard, both hitting and pitching, remained the same with five days to go in the MLB regular season, baring any Game 163. South Side Hit Men
The Chicago Cubs on Saturday, October 2, 2021 set a 146 year old MLB record. With the likely institution of the Designated Hitter in the National League next season, the record will likely never be broken. Park Ridge, IL native Tyler Ladendorf pinch hit for Cubs starting pitcher Adrian Sampson in the top of the 5th inning to become the 54th batter in the 2021 season. Tyler ground out to third baseman Nolan Arenado as the first batter. Tyler was two batters shy of hitting for a second time in the inning, before he was replaced by Cubs reliever Trevor Megill to start the bottom of the 5th. Below is a chart of how this record progressed over the 146 year history of professional baseball. South Side Hit Men
The Chicago Cubs placed Wilson Contreras on the IL today, and called up Tyler Payne. Tyler made his major league debut in the top of the fifth, striking out swinging pinch hitting for Cubs starter Alec Mills to become the 55th Batter for the Cubs this season. Tyler remained in the game replacing starting catcher Erick Castillo, and also struck out swinging in the top of the seventh, before the game was called after seven innings due to rain. The New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles did not use any additional pitchers, to finish the season tied with the 2019 Seattle Mariners with the all time record of 42 pitchers used in a season.
