Songs to make you cry

"That's My Job" by Conway Twitty gets me everytime!

I woke up crying late at night

when I was very young.

I had dreamed my father

had passed away and gone.

My world revolved around him

I couldnt lay there anymore.

So I made my way down the mirrored hall

and tapped upon his door.

And I said "Daddy, I'm so afraid

how will I go on with you gone that way?

Don't wanna cry anymore

so may I stay with you?"

And he said "That's my job,

that's what I do.

Everything I do is because of you,

To keep you safe with me.

That's my job you see."

Later we barely got along

this teenage boy and he.

Most of the fights it seems

were over different dreams,

we each held for me.

He wanted knowledge and learning.

I wanted to fly out west.

Said, "I could make it out there

if I just had the fare.

I got half, will you loan me the rest?"

And I said "Daddy, I'm so afraid,

there's no guarantee in the plans

I've made and if I should fail,

who will pay my way back home?"

And he said "That's my job

that's what I do.

Everything I do is because of you

to keep you safe with me.

That's my job you see."

Every person carves his spot

and fills the hole with light.

And I pray someday I might

light as bright as he.

Woke up early one bright fall day

to spread the tragic news.

After all my travel, I settled down

within a mile or two.

I make my living with words and rhyme

and all this tragedy

Should go into my head and out instead

as bits of poetry.

But I say "Daddy, I'm so afraid,

how will I go on with you gone this way?

How can I come up with a song to say

I love you?"

That's my job, That's what I do

Everything I do is because of you

to keep you safe with me.

That's my job you see.

Everything I do is because of you

to keep you safe with me.

Zach I was trying to remember the title. Another great hit from the 70s.

I suggested Brandy because the song is so bad it makes me cry. I believe it was once picked as the worse hit of all time.

Another great tear jerker, Mandy by Barely Manalow I can't listen to it anymore without hearing Steve Dahl's Oh Wally lyrics.

Sarah Smile by Hall & Oates is one that gets me at times.

I saw Hall and Oats do a 20 minute rendition of Sarah Smile in concert in Milwaukee when they opned for ELO. Every women in the stadium was crying by the end. I went and bought beer twice before they ended. Every guy in line was saying, yeah my date started crying so I bailed out to get some food.

Is Barely Manenough and Joe Montana the same person? How about Time in New England? My sister loved Barely so I got to hear a lot of his music back in the 70's.

My dad always liked that Mike and the Mechanics song about getting once last chance to say something to his dad...(my mind is drawing blanks on songs for some reason today).

In the Living Years.

Every generation

Blames the one before

And all of their frustrations

Come beating on your door

I know that I'm a prisoner

To all my Father held so dear

I know that I'm a hostage

To all his hopes and fears

I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper

Filled with imperfect thought

Stilted conversations

I'm afraid that's all we've got

You say you just don't see it

He says it's perfect sense

You just can't get agreement

In this present tense

We all talk a different language

Talking in defence

Say it loud, say it clear

You can listen as well as you hear

It's too late when we die

To admit we don't see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel

Between the present and the past

We only sacrifice the future

It's the bitterness that lasts

So Don't yield to the fortunes

You sometimes see as fate

It may have a new perspective

On a different day

And if you don't give up, and don't give in

You may just be O.K.

Say it loud, say it clear

You can listen as well as you hear

It's too late when we die

To admit we don't see eye to eye

I wasn't there that morning

When my Father passed away

I didn't get to tell him

All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit

Later that same year

I'm sure I heard his echo

In my baby's new born tears

I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear

You can listen as well as you hear

It's too late when we die

To admit we don't see eye to eye

It's "Weekend in New England."

"The Living Years" always chokes me up.

He always said that he could relate to it which confuses me. I can't being myself to ask why since they had a good relationship considering the distance (my grandda lived in Ireland). I wasn't sure if my dad thought he let his dad down by leaving (my grandda wanted my dad to stay and handle the family farm) or the guilt that my dad carried with him over his brother's death (my dad had nothing to do with it, but blamed himself for it for quite some time after the accident).

Thanks. I should have looked up the correct title. Didn't Barely also do the theme song for American Bandstand?

I probably would have been in line with ya, but it is a sad song...

Problem is I really liked the song until those two over acted on the stage floor for 20 minutes (timed) The rest of the story. I was with two buddies so no one to console. We were in the second row so we got to see it all up close.

I'll never forget that concert. The Stones had announced their Steel Wheels Tour and tickets were going to be some high price like $30 or $40 so concert attendance was down for almost every other act. I was a huge ELO fan at the time and was going no matter what. Hall and Oats also had Private Eyes (?) which had been played to death leading up to the concert. By the end of their set I came to dislike H&O so much.

Concerts can change opinions of songs so much. I remember not liking Burn Down the Mission until I saw Elton John in concert at the old Popular Creek. I called up the day of the concert for lawn seats and the Tickettron agent said pavilion were still available. I snagged 5th row center. Someone explained they were the tickets that the staff and crew were allotted that no one used.
