Does Dallas Keuchel even make the Playoff Roster?

agreed, as it's not like you can bring him in as a lefty specialist with the way lefties have hit him this year.

Nope…he doesn’t serve any purpose right now. None.

Well, I once thought keeping Orlando Hernandez on a playoff roster over Brandon McCarthy made no sense as Hernandez had lost his rotation spot as was genuinely bad down the stretch….

Yeah but I think El Duque did serve a purpose given his track record in the post season.  I don't see what purpose Keuchel serves right now.

Brings to memory Hernandez going against Ramirez/Ortiz in the playoffs. Those two actually looked intimidated at the plate. Hadn't seen that before and just showed that the Duke knew he still had something serious to bring, even if only for a moment.

If the post season started today, I think he would have a spot in the bullpen, purely because of the experience he brings,  but I think he would have a real short leash.

He's got another month to turn it around. Remember, this is his first full season since 2018. He played a half season for Atlanta in 2019 and obviously the pandemic shortened 2020. He could very well just be tired...or maybe he's pitching hurt.

3 months ago if we were having a discussion about Reynaldo v. Keuchel it would've been asinine. Clearly that is not the case now, however it's baseball & weird things happen. We have the division won, so let's just keep throwing him out there and see what happens.

If he continues to hurt the team via bullpen usage or (somewhat) critical losses as we try to secure home field throughout? then you reassess. But there is value if he can go out there and give you 6IP every 5th day, even if that equals 4-5ER in each of those starts.

I would like to see Dallas transitioned to the bullpen now, so he is ready for his playoff role.

There are five off days between now and the final game. They can bring up Steiver for the one DH start against Cleveland, and go with Reynaldo as the fifth starter. He may also be needed as a fourth playoff starter if something unexpected happens.

Transition Keuchel both mentally and physically for his bullpen role now, and  next season as he can serve as a long man or first/second replacement for an injured pitcher in 2022. The Sox have 20 million legitimate reasons to do this.
