People don't like Manfred because he's not smart enough (and too weak) to have the best interests of the entire sport in his purvey. Adam Silver is smart and strong enough to look the owners in the eye and tell them that they are gonna kill the sport if they try some stupid lockout season long. People are also failing to realize there are multiple ownership cohorts and each one has different interests. Manfred’s job is to find common ground that benefits everyone and instead he’s hoping he can just bully the MLBPA into solving his problems. Losing games is the result of his shitty leadership and long-term planning.

Exactly, Silver (or Stern) would look the greedier ones in the eye and tell them how fucking stupid they are and how they gonna kill the golden goose. Manfred is probably sitting there saying "well if that's what they want hey, we'll just have to accommodate them". Nothing in Manfred's tenure suggests he has any clue that his job is to protect the owners by protecting them against themselves at times.

He just works for the owners to get a vote from them. The animosity towards him is puzzling. He just spins the owners decisions. Eh.. lets not go that far. I don't think the owners called the World Series trophy "just a piece of metal" once upon a time like he did. This isn't counting his condensing remarks with rules changes either. There's plenty of reasons why he has animosity towards him. Edited March 1, 2022 by SoxAce
Harold's Leg Lift
Anyone who says Rob Manfred is just a mouthpiece for the owners doen't know who Rob Manfred is and what he's done during his 35 + years working for MLB.

bmags
The idea that the last 5 years have been difficult for mlb financials and that it is due to labor cost is so silly. And it points to his horrendous leadership in failing to nab the new revenue streams others have been so able to claim. And now he lets games be lost over labor disputes that frankly aren’t close to the level of disagreements in years past. Eat shit manfred. 1 2
pcq
The owners have given up so much and the players are bad. The taxes on billion dollar assets are burdensome.

I will never support BP after they wrote me a nasty email back in 2008 about how I hadn't actually cancelled my sub and then I produced the receipts and all I got was a curt "your sub is now cancelled" and no refund for the additional month I was charged. thanks for coming to my ted talk. Congrats. Your vendetta dates all the way back to the Russian invasion of Georgia after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nice bookends. Just goes to reinforce that the power of negative customer feedback is 10X more impactful than positive experiences. In all seriousness, I won't miss spring training, but will really start to get bored around the 2nd or 3rd week of April after the Masters and Final 4 are over and the weather's starting to turn increasingly nice. Following the minor leagues would be fine (see 2008 and 2016-17) if the White Sox weren't the worst farm system in baseball, but there's Colas, Vera and Cespedes at least.

Usually good people. It got demoted to low A last year but Noelvi Marte was on the team #11 prospect in baseball.
caulfield12
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/071415/how-nba-makes-money.asp The NBA is kicking MLB's butt in merchandising (this is one area they're catching up at least), international (50% due to China/Yao Ming, arguably, but roughly 1/4th the players are foreign nationals, which trails MLB but is much more of an asset for expanding the NBA into new markets), t.v. contracts, marketing superstars to a global level, etc. What does MLB do better than the NBA? Statistical analysis? Sabes, in the words of Greg775? Streaming/Advanced Media? Even the World Baseball Classic excitement from 10-15 years ago has pretty much worn off. Pretty sure MLB is still drawing in more revenue than the NBA, but the NBA franchise values average out higher now...and one would think they would overtake MLB in the next 5-10 years or so. maloney.adam
This is just how negotiations work. Both parties have their own needs and wants and if one party will not budge than a deal isn’t going to happen for a while until someone eventually gives in. What I think is going to eventually happen is the MLBPA is going to be forced to accept a deal because players will not be able to afford losing paychecks.
