The MLB lockout is lifted!

A lot of Walmart workers qualify for public aid but people don't seem to mind. It's kind of twisted. Also would like to see Amazon support and encourage minority retention and promotion. If I were a rich kid I would start companies just for the jobs.

I believe corporate greed is out of control and employees need to be paid a middle class wage. I wish we were as concerned about $40,000 a year employees getting exploited than $600,000 athletes. Why is it ok for one corporation to make billions and not another? Merck employees earned $138,000 in profit per employee. Give everyone a $38,000 a year raise and you would still have most of those profits. We're losing middle class wages and arguing that baseball teams are too profitable.

It's really not that different. Employees are getting screwed.

I'm against labor injustice wherever it is. This is a baseball forum, and that's what we're discussing. What is happening in baseball is the same thing that is happening in all other aspects of American life. Middle class jobs are being replaced by low wage jobs, and the top 10% will get theirs regardless.

Tex, I think most of us understand that the plight of the average worker trying to get by is infinitely more important than pro athletes getting theirs. This is a baseball forum and the buster was closed for a reason.

However, they're not getting a fair share of the pie either, and they deserve to fight for theirs.

To me, it's sad that the most powerful unions in America represent pro athletes rather than average workers.

It's almost been turned into a meme in this thread, but there is absolutely nothing about supporting players getting the historical share of revenues they have gotten in the past which disqualifies someone from feeling that other people to deserve fair wages. It's just some uneeded whataboutism.

I think when a spotlight is shining on a problem it's a great opportunity to help everyone. If this work stoppage could help millions of similarly mistreated workers it could change history.

If Cleveland and Cincy are going to feature $40M payrolls I would seriously run them out of town. The owners need to police their colleagues and get this straightened out.

Cincy, if memory serves me correctly, at least ran a really legit payroll through the 2020 season.

The real culprits are the A's, Marlins (historically), Indians, Rays (although they do it so effectively), the Orioles (just terrible in general, although they do occasionally overspend for a free agent that goes all Adam Dunn on them).

Projected 2022 Opening Day Payrolls thanks to spotrac.com.

20 Colorado Rockies

  27 $85,258,333 - $5,570,500 - - $90,828,833  (disastrous franchise despite steady fan support)
21 Tampa Bay Rays

  30 $70,421,213 - $5,000,000 - - $75,421,213
22 Kansas City Royals

  25 $72,925,000 - - - - $72,925,000 (some hope for the future with Witt, Jr., and pitching)
23 Oakland Athletics

  27 $71,773,334 - - - - $71,773,334 (need to relocate, SOMEHOW)
24 Minnesota Twins

27 $71,742,857 - - - - $71,742,857 (the Northern Midwest's own version of JR at the helm, at least signed Buxton but dumped Berrios)
25 Seattle Mariners

27 $67,600,000 - $3,750,000 - - $71,350,000 (at least they have a plan and lots of young talent and contending)
26 Arizona Diamondbacks

  26 $66,610,000 - - - - $66,610,000 (YUCK!!!)
27 Miami Marlins

25 $55,700,000 - - - - $55,700,000 (trending upwards slightly, but such a tough division, remains to be seen on Jeter Admin)
28 Pittsburgh Pirates

  25 $21,450,000 - $3,000,000 - - $34,450,000 (YUCK 2!!!)
29 Baltimore Orioles

  26 $23,750,000 - $17,000,000 - - $29,416,666 (all their hopes are pinned on Rutschmann and the draft/farm system)
30 Cleveland Guardians

  26 $29,050,000 - - - - $29,050,000 (remarkably resilient but owe their fans a lot more, starting with Jose Ramirez/Bieber extensions)

Isn't that simply called "negotiating"? I am sort of tired of people acting like there has to be a villain here. Both sides have demands that aren't being met and want as much as they can possibly get. That's how this stuff goes.

What does this have to do with labor negotiations?  This is anti-owner propaganda having nothing to do with today's issues.

Lmao exactly the response I expected from the owners lackey.  Maybe next time i should talk about players being happy with what they've got

A 43 day delay to create a deadline was the explicit negotiating strategy of one side.

If opening day doesn’t happen, the side that chose that strategy will be to blame for it.

If that makes them villains…well that’s the term you chose.

And on the other point…no, trying to find the point where the other side will break is not negotiating, at least not the only version of it. It is also possible to recognize that a lockout costs money for both sides and work to find common ground in the middle. It would take time in this case since there are actual problems with the MLB market and how it is operating, so one might want to come in with an open mind and leave one’s self plenty of time to do the hard work of reworking the whole system.

I have a good feeling this gets figured out in next 48 hours. No one makes money if they don’t play. The agreement was always going to go down to the final hour. Mlb will meet in the middle on most issues by late tonight and we’ll have baseball March 31.

At least that is what I am going to keep telling myself.

I bet the players would sign up right away if they were self-made men.

What do you mean by self made men?  Are you suggesting all the owners made their billions on their own?  Right off the back I can tell you that Papa Ricketts bought his kids the Cubs, Hal Steinbrenner, Carl Pohlad, & Christopher Ilitch inherited their teams from their fathers, and many other owners’ wealth that allowed them to purchase their teams in the first place was driven by inheritance and/or family business opportunities including the Montfort brothers, Edward Rogers, John Fisher, Charles Johnson, John Middleton, & Larry Dolan.  Many of your heroes don’t deserve to be billionaires based on their own personal accomplishments.

To be honest, the owners had zero reason to move on their positions before their self-imposed deadline, so today was always going to be a huge day.  I’m hopefully we see some real movement and they find a way to come to a deal without impacting the length of the regular season.

Hopefully but man I just don’t see it.

Also, I think the player’s “ghost win” concept is pretty cool for the expanded playoffs.  Adding a bunch more teams takes away the importance of a 162 regular season, but if winning your division gets you a bye or a free win in a best of five series that would be absolutely huge.  Honestly, the proposal probably helps the White Sox more than any other team in baseball in the short-term and I really hope it happens.
