So I exported the BP Catcher Stats and sorted them by the Free agent catchers.

Here's some good-to-knows (this is 2021 only)

Best FA catchers rated at blocking:

Yan Gomez (.4 Blocking Runs)
Roberto Peres (.2 Blocking Runs)
Alex Avila (.2 Blocking runs)
Austin Romine (.1 Blocking runs)
Sandy Leon (.1 Blocking Runs

For Context:
Yaz 0.0 so...uh err
Seby -0.2
Zack -0.6

Best rated at Throwing out runners
Kurt Suzuki - 0.3
Wilson Ramos - 0.1
Stephen Vogt - 0.1
Jose Lobaton - 0.1

For Context:
Zack Collins - 0.4
Yaz - 0.1
Seby - 0.0
(BP takes into account

Best rated at Framing
Maldonado - 2.3
Vogt - 1.7
Knapp - 1.2
Mathis - 0.7
Vaille - 0.1

For Context:
Yaz - 3.1
Seby - 0.7
Zack - -10.1

Overall Defensive Adjustment
Maldonado - 1.8
Vogt - 1.8
Knapp - 0.4

(Yaz was 3.2, Seby 0.0)

Offensive wRC+ for those catchers:
Maldonado - 63 (steamer projection - 73)
Vogt - 64 (steamer projection - 83)
Knapp - 17 (steamer projection - 72)

(Seby - 66 with steamer projection of 60)

Robinson Chirinos has a negative CDA of 0.3 (essentially he is completely average in all categories) with a wRC last year of 108 and a steamer of 85.

I think looking at this, you are probably best off throwing ST invites at Chirinos, but maybe a ML deal to Vogt.

There would be good reason to go after Yan Gomez, he provides nearly average offense and good blocking, but BP hates his framing and throwing, which could be an issue.

Curious, where was Maldonado in throwing out runners? I was under the impression that he was strong/elite in this category and expected to see him here.

Actually, for how the broadcasts played up his defensive specialist role throughout the playoffs, kind of expected to see him topping all of these defensive metrics.

I mean, he probably is, but he was -0.3 here. I don't know, I think BP is the most critical at appraising their catching stats year over year and trying to verify so I take them with the most validity.

However, I'd venture to rely more on the fact that Maldonado is very good at defense. That said, you look at the top catchers and Salvy is amazing in these, so it clearly is aligned decently and Maldonado had a lot of chances. No idea, but I think we'd be happy if we signed Maldonado.

My personal preference is to go Chirinos/Perez battle for backup. I'm a big believer that we have a Major Leaguer in Carlos Perez, not a starter, but a guy we can have on our bench for a long time.

I believe Maldonado signed a contract extension early last season with the Astros. They also have a catching prospect who should arrive this year so they are a good match for him.

He's definitely a FA.

Free Agent Target: Chris Taylor...for '21, 48 starts in center field, 33 at second base, 19 at shortstop, 16 in left, and nine at third. It could be we don't sign a corner OF'er AND 2B. Taylor provides the versatility to fill in where needed. Not left handed but extremally versatile and productive. FG suggests 4yrs/$60M should do the trick.

My perfect off-season..

sign stroman to a 5 yr deal

extend giolitto

sign conforto to a few year deal

2b is very tough… ideally id get seager or story but that’s not going to happen. Semiem would be good to, but ud rather not spend high money on him. So maybe chris taylor?

Stroman will never pitch for TLR.  The end.
