Rodon and Ray aren't in the same situation.

Pretty damn deflating seeing these good deals being handed out for quality starting pitching, of which this team still needs.
T R U
(White Sox sign Chris Archer) Everyone: Hey, I thought you wanted someone like Robbie Ray? White Sox: Well, I mean, they are both starting pitchers....

That's what the White Sox offered Wheeler...when they had a team payroll of $80 million the previous season and a starting rotation where Arbitration for Rodon was at the time their highest salaried starter. This is true, but it's also a sorry ass excuse if that's the FO's thinking.

Maybe they really did not think either of them were the answer for their rotation needs.

ChiSox59
I wanted Robby Ray last year. Feel free to look it up. I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole for 5/$115M.

Eventually JR has to start spending the mountains of cash he has been sitting on or make a few more mountains with a sale and get the fuck out of the way. Jerry being cheap does not mean fans should preach his message as the "right way" to operate a team. That basically plays into the narrative this organization has sold it's fans forever. Look at how many people on this board throw parties when top FA's sign with other teams because it's a "bad deal" or "overpay." In what world do fans want ownership to make more money so they can watch lesser talent? It's amazing to see time and time again. Also, Robbie Ray's issue was never stuff, it was command. Finding command is very much something that can maintain itself. If his command holds, his stuff is dynamite and always has been.

I called it an albatross last off-season and was mocked for it. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Keuchel vests for next year with the Sox’ lack of depth (Rodon gone, Lynn’s knee). A team that doesn’t draft and keep solid quality cost controlled players doesn’t have a “multi championship window”, now matter how many decades Hahn is around to declare that they are.
