Just based on my googling, he is a very small guy with little power and great/walk.  Bats left.  Anyone with an idea on defense? Sooo likely a Madrigal comp., conveniently, with a bit more pop?

I don't think we need a superstar at 2B.  I just continue to assume the Sox will do the right thing and sign Conforto.  With Conforto in hand, you can go any number of directions for 2B. Prieto would be a super interesting add for 2B, along with a bench piece like Josh Harrison, Jose Iglesias, Chris Owings or Niko Goodrum to help fill the gap until he's ready or just give us a little insurance.  That only make sense (in the short term) assuming Prieto is 1) close to MLB ready (he is 22 already) and 2) can actually play stateside in 22.   Even if the answer to one or both of those is no, its still a name worth monitoring.

Sounds like Adam Frazier

Badlers top 50 dropped. Colas at 5, Hernandez at 42.

Nice we are getting some left handed bats in the system between Montgomery, Kath, Colas, and Hernandez.

That's kinda disappointing.  The report on Hernandez seemed way more positive than #42, though it really is a crazy space.

eh, not a big deal. Paddy gave a kid a big bonus, I expect a lot out of him.

FWIW: Baseball America's big board ranks players by signing bonus now instead of as a true talent ranking.

Ah, I didn't read the beginning but I thought since there was such a delay they had done talent rankings. Makes sense.

I think he just started to feel uncomfortable with the subjectivity of the whole thing and he hasn't seen a lot of these guys since they were like 14-15 so he doesn't want to be super wrong if they suddenly grew like 6 inches or something. Also, the situation in Venezuela is really bad and it's actually dangerous to say that "Venezuelan shortstop X will soon have $5 million" etc because it's a legit danger to their family potentially.

I take it no more information has slid out of the rest of the signings?

I have no idea what they're doing with the rest of their money. I've heard that they like Cesar Prieto but I don't think they have enough $$ for that. I'm assuming they have multiple $400-$600K signings that I don't know about

How much do you expect Prieto to get?  2 million?

Paddy's work is by far the most complicated for me. I find it both incredibly productive and needlessly limited. The man brings in some of the biggest stars in the game in tatis, robert and abreu, has found some nice prospects when he had no money periods in Jose Rodriguez...

and routinely punts on so much money. Not sure if it's him, but crazy that he doesn't want a more aggressive backing.

Yeah I’ll never understand their strategy

Mags, what do you mean here?  Is it the fact that we often traded international bonus money for low level prospects?  If so, I agree that it doesn't make sense.

It’s US tax law though. The biggest issue appears to be that the contract is signed in January at the beginning of the calendar year. If it were July, it wouldn’t be much if an issue IMO

Other than taxation, what would prevent Colas from playing major league baseball in the US this year?  Is the issue one involving tax law or immigration law?

For example, Is there a way for Colas to have income tax withheld (i.e., a central witholding agreement) which might satisfy tax liability?

I don’t know specifically. The Sox are giving him $2.7 million. He has residency in the DR but not the US. Since he’s signing in January, he’ll spend the year in the DR so he receives the majority of his bonus. If they brought him right over, he wouldn’t. Same thing happened with Vera, Yolbert, Robert, etc. I don’t have specifics as to why though. Anyone work in tax law?
