That's no surprise.  The system is trash above A+ in pitching.

There still seems to be a major disconnect between what Katz is doing with pitchers in the major leagues and what happens in the minors. The best orgs are able to sync that type of stuff up.

There was a definite hole in tale after Kopech and Cease.

Lenyn Sosa on BA's hot sheet.

Quote

Lenyn Sosa, 2B, White Sox
Team: Double-A Birmingham (Southern)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .444/.444/.815 (12-for-27), 4 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBIs, 0 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: Sosa has been one of the best hitters in the White Sox’s system this year. The 22-year-old was always intriguing, but he’d never performed anywhere near the levels he’s showing during a breakout year. Now, his .368 average leads the Southern League and his on-base and slugging percentages are in the top five on the circuit. His nine home runs are just two shy of his career best, which was set last season between High-A and Double-A. After a few years with a mostly fallow system, some players like Sosa are starting to bubble to the top. (JN)

Will Norge Vera actually be playing baseball this season?

The original plan was for him to get back around the 1st of June, but I don't remember hearing any updates lately.  Realistically he will just show up one day and be playing.

Was I wrong - I thought I read he was pretty close to being back in the minors and was already doing work in Arizona.

Pipeline piece on best secondary pitches in each org.

White Sox: Cristian Mena, RHP (No. 29), curveball
The most expensive pitcher in the White Sox' 2019 international class, Mena signed for $250,000 out of the Dominican Republic. He has the makings of a plus curveball with upper-70s velocity and true downer break, and it helped him lead the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in strikeouts per nine innings (11.5) last year. He's thriving in Single-A with a 3.22 ERA and a 50/11 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings.

I wonder if this is more of trade piece evaluation than promotional thoughts?

For those that missed it.

It's been a while, but about 17 years ago Rockies brought up Tulo straight from AA.

Based on Lenyn's history I want to see him in Charlotte first (@Y2Jimmy0 explained at length the whole cut Harrison, promote Yolbert, promote Sosa to AAA scenario), but I wouldn't hate this - I would be cautious though.

BA's Constructing the Ideal 2022 Futures Game Rosters.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/constructing-the-ideal-2022-futures-game-rosters/

Quote

SS/2B — Lenyn Sosa, White Sox
Sosa has long been a prospect to keep an eye on. If you heeded those instructions, you’d see a player in the midst of a breakout. Just 22 years old, Sosa leads the Southern League in both batting average (.341) and RBIs (45) and is second in home runs (13).

Quote

SS — Colson Montgomery, White Sox
The White Sox’s first-round pick in the 2021 draft, Montgomery has been excellent this season despite dealing with nagging injuries in his hand/wrist area. Despite that, he’s produced a .301 average and a .408 on-base percentage with the help of a pretty swing from the left side.

Fegan with a nice prospect piece on 5 position player prospects on the upswing.

Will provide the bit on Sosa. Yolbert, Colson, Ramos, andd Colas are also talked about at length.

Lenyn Sosa

22-year-old infielder hitting .341/.392/.565 with a career-high 13 home runs in 260 plate appearances at Double-A Birmingham

Sosa, always playing against older competition as a professional, avoided strikeouts well at the lower levels and handled shortstop despite not possessing standout quickness or throwing strength. So in some respects, it’s not that surprising that Sosa is striking out just 13.5 percent of the time against a level of competition that flattened him in a 33-game Double-A debut last season, or that he’s continuing to acquit himself well at three separate infield positions this year.

But the all-fields power in what is not a traditional hitter’s park at Regions Field — or a legitimate 30-homer pace for someone whose previous career-high is 10 — is a development that Getz feels harkens back to Sosa’s decision to report early to the team’s Dominican academy in January. That came ahead of spring training in Arizona, where Sosa worked mechanically on stacking himself on his back leg and hip in his swing’s load. Sosa is still an aggressive hitter who scouts see will chase off-speed stuff out of the zone at times, but he’s positioned himself well to clobber fastballs, and that’s been Job No. 1 for hitting for a long time.

“He felt like he needed to make some adjustments, some mechanical adjustments and getting into his legs using his back hip, having less movement in his load,” said Getz, who noted that Sosa has added strength over the years as well. “It has allowed him to reach that power, and allowed him to swing with a little bit more intent. And I think the most exciting part is that he’s hitting with power properly. You see guys in the minor leagues that are dead-pull power hitters, that you know that perhaps that’s going to be exposed at upper levels. He has an approach that’s going to play at any level.”

General manager Rick Hahn has said that Sosa can now be viewed as someone with an estimated major league arrival of this season, though obviously not quite yet. League scouts are now more willing to project Sosa as a possible future regular, even if they think he will probably cede shortstop to rangier athletes, as the aggression and internal clock that make Sosa passable at short in the minors will also serve him well at second base. Getz expressed some interest in seeing how Sosa fares after clearing the 400- and 500-plate appearance thresholds at a level (he’s near 400 combined at Double A including last season) but admits that Sosa has done work to alter how his future is viewed.

“We haven’t seen this level of production before, but we always believed in him to be a major league player,” Getz said. “You do naturally evaluate and look at him a little bit differently than before in that I think he could handle an everyday position and multiple roles, to be quite honest with you, at multiple positions. He’s been playing a lot of shortstops here recently. We’ve been impressed with his play. We know that he can handle second base and third base. And I think there’s enough production at each of them.”

Colas made the hot list for BA this week. Also seems he changed his swing mechanics. They provide a video in the article, and he indeed has gone from a big leg kick to more or less staying planted and pivoting.

Quote

7. Oscar Colas, OF, White Sox
Team: High-A Winston-Salem (South Atlantic)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .522/.577/.739 (12-for-23), 4 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBIs, 3 BB, 1 SO

The Scoop: Colas is the latest in a line of high-profile White Sox signings from Cuba. After a year in the DSL, Colas jumped to High-A (just a level ahead of another high-profile Cuban, Norge Vera, at Low-A) and has been up and down this season. His OPS in April was .842. In May, the figure dipped to .638, and he spent about a week on the IL. In June (with most of the month complete) Colas boasts an OPS of 1.008 and has gone hitless just thrice in the month. Interestingly, Colas appears to have made a change to his swing mechanics. Check out the two video clips below this capsule. The first swing, which shows his big leg kick, came during the first series of the year. The second swing, where Colas utilizes more of a pivot on his front foot, was taken in Winston-Salem’s most recent series, when he sprayed the ball around the park for six games. (JN)

Yoelqui made the BA hot sheet.

Quote

20. Yoelqui Cespedes, OF, White Sox
Team: Double-A Birmingham (Southern)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .412/.565/.941 (7-for-17), 3 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 5 SO, 4-for-4 SB

The Scoop: For the first two months of the season, Cespedes almost literally never walked. In April and May, he walked just three times in 35 games. He drew five walks this past week alone, and since June 1 has racked up 16 bases on balls. Perhaps not coincidentally, Cespedes’ most patient month has also been his most powerful. His nine walks in July are a high-water mark for any month this season, and his eight extra-base hits are on track to eclipse the 10 he accumulated in April. (JN)
