Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin

Conforto turned 29 this month. He'd be good to have for a year or two if an option is on the table (who knows). If he gets 4 years he'll probably be overpaid on the back end. He might have one monster year in him for his career. His 2017 All-Star year (.384/.555) extrapolated for 155 games instead of 109 would be a huge boost to this lineup.

I wouldn't want to part with either Sheets or Vaughn if it's Manaea they're going after.

I mentioned yesterday I'm not a huge fan of A's pitchers given how pitcher friendly that ballpark is and their natural regression when they leave there, but I'd pay for Sheets plane ticket myself, first class, if it meant shipping just him for either one of those guys.

Look, much of the board is now having the same meltdown i had weeks/months ago.

I've settled into the level of "acceptance" already, so Pederson doesn't bother me as much as it should.

So while the "rebuilding" scrubs get Stroman and Suzuki, the "contending" white sox get Pederson and Velasquez. This is fine.

Joc does provide us a cheap upgrade short term stop gap until Colas is ready

Again: why would you sign a 1.5 WAR aging FA in order to jettison a 1.5 WAR younger, could still improve player you have under team control?

Vaughn can't play RF

Sheets can't play

Engel van barely play

Only one of Sheets and Vaughn can DH imo bc they should not be platooned

They should look to trade Sheets and Burger unless they want to go with a legit far superior lineup of

SS Timmy

2B Moncada

1B Abreu

C Grandal

DH Eloy

CF Robert

LF Vaughn

3B Burger

(Insert a RF signing into that lineup somewhere depending on who it is and this lineup is on par with any in baseball)

People forget than Vaughn and Sheets are statues in RF. They're a joke out there. Vaughn is hideable in LF. Sheets is 1B/DH only.

He probably wanted to go back to Atlanta. But they were so adamant about that 6th year that Atlanta said fuck it and traded for Olson. Now he might not get that 6th year with another team.

Imagine: You've tried to extend the guy for the past 5 years.

You win the world series.  He raises his ask.

He comes back from the lockout raising his ask because of the banning of the shift.

Anthopoulos was crying but it MUST have been so satisfying pulling the trigger on that deal.

I don't think Burger is a ML ready hitter yet. Yes, he hit the shit out of some fastballs last year. But he looked utterly lost against any kind of breaking ball.

Burger is ready imo and will be around a 0.250-0.275 hitter with 20-25+ HR potential.  He has nothing else to improve or show the team in AAA.  If the team is not there then he should be in a trade for a RF/2B/SP

I haven't lost it. I display my sentiments pretty dispassionately because I've seen it so many times before . I feel for @Chicago White Sox because he thought they would treat a division winner better than they treated semi contending teams.

Every year he's so optimistic that this is the year we sign the big free agent solution or TLR convinces JR to open his wallet and when he does it's to TLR type guys . It's the old out of touch manager whispering in the ear of the old out of touch owner with support from the GM who thinks a good draft idea is taking relief pitchers. It's the new market inefficiency right ?

This is a very fair synopsis but I still believe Conforto is destined for this team.

For nearly a decade you’ve begged for a left-handed power bat and now one is there for the taking at a position of need and you’re not interested?  I’m at a loss of words.

I still covet a LH power bat, however I don't think Conforto, at the price and length of contract that has been discussed here, is the one that Hahn should pursue? He will cost a draft pick, will probably be ineligible to play, when the Sox travel to N.Y. and Toronto, and is said to be seeking a 4, or 5 year deal at $20 million per year. I prefer a shorter term commitment, with the hope that Colas, or someone else can provide better value. If Conforto would sign a shorter contract, I'd be quite satisfied with him in RF.

If he is the best value available, I'd certainly rather the Sox acquire him, than no one. I just don't think that he is the guy to whom Hahn should be committing $100 Million. Tyler Naquin for his final year before free agency, at $1.45 Million seems like a better value. Most seem to agree that he wouldn't cost much in draft capital. That would provide the front office with an opportunity to see if Colas shows enough promise to be a viable long term candidate for RF.

I'm still expecting the Sox to make a "big" move whether it's trading for a SP from Oak or signing a RF.

I think the timing of their anticipated moves as well as the Freeman/Jansen signings are holding things up. They likely need to move Kimbrel to clear up money for RF or move him to get the prospects for the SP trade. I think we'll see a quick flurry of moves once these dominoes fall.

Visiting players who aren't vaccinated can play in NYC. The Sox don't play in Toronto until May 31. Hopefully, COVID is done with by then and Canada retracts their vaccine requirement to enter the country. Even if they don't, I wouldn't worry about losing a guy for 3 games when you're talking about a 4 year contract.

Might as well try to grab Mahle and Naquin in one move as well.

Conforto's 3 year ZiPS projection

2022: 2.4 WAR

2023: 2.5 WAR

2024: 2 WAR

I'm gonna assume 2025 is gonna be sub-2 WAR.

So in all, you're getting around 9 WAR the next 4 years. If the asking price really is 4 years and $88 million, I can see why the Sox would be hesitant. But that does not excuse how they've mis-allocated funds so far this off-season.

Year 4 doesn’t matter with Gioltio, Lynn, Anderson, Grandal, & Abreu all possibly gone.
