Why not?  He didn’t even make our playoff roster.  And do you really want his option for 2023 vesting?

They'll roll dice with him early to see if he finds a way to get people out and eat up innings, then they'll dump him right before the options vests.

There is no way he goes to the pen, or they would have tried that option in the playoffs.

Whether Keuchel opens the season in the rotation or not, he is still going to start more games and pitch more innings than any of us want. People underestimate how much pitching depth is required to get through a season. Why make plan A Keuchel in your rotation when you don't have to?

I understand your perspective, there is a chance you're right. I think Keuchel being left off the playoff roster was an indication they aren't going to handle him any differently than his performance warrants just because he's on an expensive contract. Maybe if the Sox had more upper minors pitching depth ready to break through, but he & Lopez are really the only guys in the organization you can feel are better than replacement level after the big 4 and I think they'll know that isn't enough pitching depth for a world series contending team.

Not a big believer in Stiever or Lambert?   We better hope Vera is #1 on the top prospects list one year from now....or one of those 3-4 A ball hurlers can figure something out and magically stay healthy.

Our two biggest needs are a left-handed power bat and a legit #3 starter.  You don’t fuck with two question marks in your rotation when you’re trying to win a Championship.

I can’t believe people are actually ok with this guy as our #4 starter next year:

There's a difference between being "OK" vs being "Realistic" with the situation.

Every Sox fan wishes Keuchel would pull an Adam LaRoche and pack his shit and go home leaving all the money on the table.

That's not happening, we need to live with the fact that he will be part of that rotation.   Like it or not.

That’s still so incredible that happened. Who leaves like $12M on the table over that BS? Crazy

Now Cease isn't worthy of being a #3?

OK dude, put the coffee down and log off.   Go play Fantasy Baseball elsewhere.

I’m very confident the Sox acquire a SP, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Who said Cease isn’t a #3?  Are you assuming this because I want a 4th starter who actually is good?

I don’t have any guesses about what the white Sox will actually do other than “Kimbrel is worthless”, but there is some additional pitching likely needed. I checked a few months ago and all of the teams that won playoff series were going 7 or 8 starters deep over the season and especially in the playoffs. For the White Sox, imagine Lambert or Stiever starting against the Astros and Lopez getting 2 starts?

You literally said you want a legit #3, so which of our Top 3 isn't worthy of being a Legit 3?

But Keuchel makes $18M in the last year of his deal, so we’re not allowed to do anything but use him as our #4 starter next year despite rapidly declining stuff and horrible results last season. Let’s hope Hahn doesn’t accept mediocrity simply because he has a bad contract on his hands.

Our 4th starter might be our best starter. His name is Kopech. Not sure why you keep referring to Keuchel as anything but the 5th SP.

I know this is hard to comprehend, but we can have two #3 caliber starters in the same rotation.  And FWIW, I think Cease is more like a low end #2 starter who still has plenty of room for growth.  He just slots as our #3 starter because we have two guys who are better.
