ron883
I know this is similar to the other thread, but i want to get a gauge on what the board thinks. Would you be in favor of moving Yoan to 2B and starting Burger at 3B? It would be a boost to the offense, without question. The infield defense would likely suffer a little. Jake looks at least average at 3B. Yoan is not as good as Harrison at 2B. Let's see how the poll shakes out.
caulfield12
No. If Burger is doing another Yermin for the (entire) first month, then you can at least think about it…if Harrison is still hitting in the 100’s. Even then, TLR would start playing Leury there more frequently. Edited April 17, 2022 by caulfield12
CaliSoxFanViaSWside
I think defense is way more important than a lot of people think. It would probably downgrade defense at both 2nd and 3rd base .TB wins a lot on a shoestring budget because they play good D usually and put a lot of lefties in their lineup which is all fueled by phenomenal drafting and development and restocking the farm the minute someone gets pricey. If the Rays had Moncada they would probably be trading him in the next year or so. Edited April 17, 2022 by CaliSoxFanViaSWside
Chick Mercedes
There are pros and cons. But on balance, getting the most talent on the field is what make it a plus move overall. Despite the way over optimistic take that Burger can feasibly play second base, the odds seem very much against. So Yoan to second is an easy decision imo.

ShoeLessRob
Where would Leury and Josh play? TLR would never bench their veteran grindyness.

This team has been built with the overkill on utility guys. Oddly, I do see making a decision based on playing utility people as a possibility. But mostly, Yoan just doesn’t have an open minded attitude for it. While saying the right things, he’s just not into it. ChiSox59
Moncada isn’t switching positions. Pin it to every thread. 1
Sarava
Moncada's really good defensively. The answer might be trying to see if Burger can play 2B competently.

You just can’t do that at the big league level with a rookie oversized for that position…you’re going to get Anderson hurt in the process. Sure, try it for a month in Charlotte, knowing any injury there keeps him off the trade market. (Max Muncy did it in a pinch, playing second, but you don’t see the Dodgers doing that any longer.)

If it can't happen, then it can't happen. But making the Sox worse defensively at both 2B and 3B is not the answer for sure.

Come to think of it. I don't see Anderson getting hurt. But you never see chubby 2nd basemen like Burger for a reason. Maybe Burger's future here is as DH? He limits his usefulness to the Sox with his conditioning.

I think the Burger is out of condition accusation is way out now, yes when he was out with his two injuries he did pile on the pounds but he is hardly a beached whale and so far has played 3B defense well and not shown any mobility issues. Having said that I would not move Moncada when he is fit and would not put Burger at 2B, playing out of position and being a rookie is not the best use of his talents. Moncada will need rest to avoid his usual injuries so Burger could get useful time covering for him and pinch hitting, whether that would be enough with the roster going to 26 soon is another question. The Sox have previously worked him at 2B, so that part isn't 100% all new. And I'm not saying he is out of condition in general, as much as he is not in condition for 2B. 2B is a position that requires elite athleticism and agility. I'm sorry I brought that up earlier. Since 3B is already taken by a better player (once Moncada returns), he probably will be a bench fill-in/DH with the Sox at this point. I hope they ultimately find a permanent spot for him in the future. I feel like he has a very bright future, wherever that ends up being.

black jack
Why weaken your entire infield by switching Moncada to second? It's down grading two positions. Send Burger down and play him at second base everyday. 2023 second baseman.

caulfield12
1.015 OPS for Vaughn against RHP. Almost double the OPS in road games compared to GRF, fwiw. Well, over 1.000 is much better than .600ish, despite SSS.
