If you go halfway there's almost no way to then tag up and get to third if it's caught.

You can blame Robert for underestimating how bad Reyes is in RF, I guess?

I think this is a situation of KYP: know your personnel.

Robert did the right thing fundamentally, but you gotta know there's a DH playing the outfield.

Luis' decision is really 50/50. If he goes halfway he can't tag and get to 3rd if it's caught. If he does what he did he can't score if it isn't. It's Leury's job to adjust to whichever decision Luis makes.

This is the most important part of this play.  If Leury is paying attention to Luis, Robert can stop at 3rd, and the Sox are still in business.

Reyes is not most RF. Read the ball and know the outfielder . Analyze, assess, that's what good base runners do.

I mean that's fine and I agree overall but that ball hit him in the glove, it's not like he was 20 feet away from it.  Luis is kind of in no man's land there and with 0 outs he decided to tag up which isn't the wrong decision there.  Leury was the one that forced everything and ran the team into an out.

OK, but once Luis makes that mistake, Leury HAS to stop at 2nd.

Right I did edit the post to say Leury had some blame before I saw your post.

However if McEwing holds him do we know for sure that Leury wouldnt have got back to 2nd base if the throw ends up in the cutoff guys hands.  Does McEwing send Robert because he see's Leury on Roberts tail or does he send Robert because he thinks with Roberts speed and a ball off the wall should score Robert  from 2nd base ?

What Leury did was the equivalent of a point guard dribbling all the way down court without looking up and running into a charge in the lane.

Let's all appreciate how TLR putting Leury 3rd most likely cost us our biggest scoring opportunity in the game. TLR even applauded Leury's base running too, which was the biggest reason for why we didn't score a few more runs. The jokes really write themselves at this point.

Jose being RH and the ball slicing away from Reyes is also something a good runner should do assess when the ball is in flight .

We would be tied if Sheets weren't in RF.  TLR is batting a thousand today.
