White Sox Dead Money 2019-2022

I can't help but think about all the players to Sox acquire that end up being dead money. It's typically barging bin contracts on washed up players. Going back to 2019 (because I'm lazy), here are contracts that were basically worthless. It may be unfair to include relievers (Herrera) and guys who just aged poorly, but I did. Is it normal for teams to have this much dead money? I understand it for teams that are big spenders, but the White Sox aren't big spenders.

2019 - 20.5m total

Kelvin Herrera - 8.5m

Jon Jay - 4m

Yonder Alonso - 8m (bought out)

2020 - 36.5m

Edwin Encarnacion - 12m

Nomar Mazara - 5.5m

Yonder Alonso - 1m (buyout)

Kelvin Herrera - 12m (buyout)

Cishek - 6m

2021 - 2m

Cesar Hernandez (2m~)

Eaton - 8m

2022 (23.5m)

Keuchel - 18m

Harrison - 5.5m

TBD - Yaz - 18.2m

Add to OP

2020: Cishek $6M

2021: Renteria's Extension, Eaton $8M (or of you're generous, $4Mish after he was DFA'd).

2022: Too early to tell for others, Kelly may be on the list if he doesn't have a good second half and or 2023. Hopefully Lynn and Eloy can stay healthy and produce.

Damn, I completely forgot Eaton. Good call.

A bit premature on Grandal and/or Jimenez.

Moncada was declared dead less than a week ago...and Lynn in his first outing back.

Interesting no Leury mentions.

Knock on wood for Hendriks.   He gets TJ the $14 million for 2023 goes down the drain as he won't be able to pitch all of 2023.

Then you're also debating if to pick up the $15 million for 2024 or buy him out for that same amount deferred over 10 years (our Bobby Bonilla)

$3.75M a year through 2023 per Heyman, plus crony salaries for the expanded staff such as Dave Duncan's son.

I have no idea one way or the other so I ask . . . Do we know that Duncan's kid is doing a bad job? I guess how would we know? The kid grew up in the game with a dad who seems to know the game. We have Giolito's crony as a pitching coach and he's doing a great job.

Gotta add Kimbrel, whatever he was getting paid.

Why? He's not dead money for LA...unless you're arguing he pitched like dead money last year?

So then there's Pollock this year and next with replacement player value at $10 million essentially.  That doesn't even feel all that terrible any more compared to some of the other ones already referenced.

From what I've read, Duncan's son is responsible for analysis Tony uses for defensive positioning, lineup construction and in game "decisions".

Ethan Katz is a professional coach hired by a professionally run MLB franchise, the team which has won "multiple championships" TM  , whereas GM Rick Hahn is limited to bullshitting about winning "multiple championships" TM.

Ethan Katz is the opposite of a crony, actually worked to make multiple MLB clubs better, whereas Duncan's son was brought into The MLB during Tony's Reign of Error in Arizona and has been associated with two of the worst staffing debacles of the past decade.

Tony's other crony "analytics expert" was a veterinarian friend of his.

TM filed by Rick Hahn, 10/26/12.

“Going into the 2015 season, the D-backs were in a bad spot, but had a chance to make a quick turnaround. They were coming off a 64-98 season, but had a farm system ranked 6th-best in the majors by Baseball America, with half a dozen names listed in the top 100 prospects, and were about to add to it, with the #1 overall pick in the June draft. They had just signed a new TV deal with Fox Sports Arizona, with a total value of $1.5 billion, including an equity stake in the network, which was expected to finance a payroll that would be capable of competing with the Giants and Dodgers.

Two years later, the team is barely any better, the farm system has been stripped to the point some now rate it dead-last, without a single D-back in MLB.com’s top 100 prospects. This season, $43.5 million, over 40% of current payroll - which really has not increased, despite the TV deal - is committed to Zack Greinke and Yasmany Tomas, who combined for less than two bWAR last year. The team has been unable to take part in the international market, due to blowing past their limit by signing Yoan Lopez, who looks a bust. And that #1 overall pick was dealt away in a deal for a pitcher who spent so long down in the minors, 2016 basically didn’t count on his contract.

I think it’s safe to say: yes, mistakes were made.”

This all sounds vaguely familiar…

Well, if Tony decides he no longer wants to pursue Connie Mack's record, or is physically unable or unwilling to deal with travel and other obligations of a manger, Tony can always slide into Kenny's spot. Jerry can crown Tony President of Baseball Operations, befitting with his qualifications.

Tony will bring in Dave Steward as GM. Hahn will switch from being Tony's direct report as he is today to Dave Stewart's special advisor to handle contracts and paperwork.

Tony can trade say Vaughn and/or Robert to Kansas City for the rights to his guy and the man he mentored, Mike Matheny, to become the next White Sox manager. Dave Duncan's son will be promoted to bench coach, with Tony's veterinarian friend's son taking over analytics,
