I definitely don’t consider extending Giolito, and may consider moving him in the offseason for the right deal. Obviously, we would have to resign Cueto to another year and probably another starter or two. we could permanently bring up Davis Martin in ‘23. I do wonder if they would consider Reynaldo Lopez as a starter in his final year. Yeah, I know been there, done that… but his stuff looks much different. Would weaken our bullpen losing Lopez, but it’s just a thought for 2023. Cease, Kopech, Cueto, Lynn, Martin, Lopez, (Giolito) Gio chose to change his body this season...I believe reports were he added 30 pounds of muscle. If the muscle gain changed his velocity for the worse, perhaps taking away some of his arm/elbow/shoulder spasticity, not sure what you expect Katz to do about it. Why a guy who was pitching the best ball of his life decided to remake his body is just beyond me. 1
Jack Parkman
I was looking up Giolito's baseball savant data and he has lost 1.1 inches of carry off his fastball, 0.9 mph of velocity and has gone from having above average horizontal movement to straight as an arrow. I think his decline can be attributed to that, as all of his other pitches are set up from his fastball. If this is sticky stuff related then idk if he will be a good pitcher again. Even a bodybuilder on steroids would find that to be a pretty daunting challenge. 1 1 1

Personally I just think he is naturally gonna be a big guy, his body is changing as he gets older, and whether or not he attributes this to intentionally bulking up or not, it’s gonna happen. But yeah, it’s stupid to do it on purpose.

His last 4 starts his fip is 3.12. Take away the 3 Eloy runs and his ERA is right about there too. 1

You're correct, but the statement was "if Eloy wasn't pathetic defensively, the thread wouldn't have any negative comments added." He's right. Giolito has been bad for the year but he's been better as of late
oldsox
Seems like he has one bad inning almost every game. No stats to back this up. Lynn, too.

For instance, Rays went something like 17-2 against Balt last year. This year, Orioles giving everyone a HUGE battle. Tale of two teams. And the Tigers did play quite well the last 6-8 weeks last season. Recently, Detroit has had just four homers in their last 16 or 17 games. Including three games at GRF. CaliSoxFanViaSWside
Recent NBC sports Chicago podcast with Lucas and Garfien Lucas mentioned Cueto made some good points about the lack of fire. Also Giolito had a 2nd bout with Covid and says it wasn't bad at all but post Covid got a nasty virus that he said was 100X worse and he pitched through it. Seems like his off year , as is usually the case, is more about health than anything. Of course we can say those are excuses and the sticky stuff ban or the weight gain could be reasons. Maybe that virus is the one that sidelined Robert and recently gave Kelly "lightheadedness" . I think the upper body strength Lucas added was just him as a ballplayer preparing for the grind since many players end the season weighing less than when they started it. These guys are all in close proximity to each other every day and perhaps they should all consider wearing masks all the time around each other. Masks are a good idea for keeping healthy in general for preventing colds and other viruses along with the other preventive measures we were all reminded of during Covid like washing hands frequently . I'll leave it up to the medical experts to say if Covid can weaken the immune system post Covid but masks are actually something that, while inconvenient, will keep you healthier in general especially when you are around a bunch of people all the time who aren't wearing masks and who have had Covid and may have weakened immune systems post Covid and more susceptible to other viruses. Don't worry, you'll get your wish when Giolito leaves next September for a much larger contract than the "FAIR" offer you are pimping. Another great outing today. Approaching Non-Tender in the offseason territory at this point.
