Leury was a free agent and signed a ridiculous three year contract with us.  He should certainly count towards any off-season ratings.

Isn’t any player not holding a guaranteed contract technically a free agent from the team’s perspective if they no longer want the player? The Sox could have let Giolito walk just as easily as Leury.

The Sox had control over Giolito through arbitration…once Leury hit free agency they lost control of him.

The Sox could have decided not to bring Giolito just as easily as Leury. Would have cost them $0 to let him walk. Neither was under contract until they offered them a contract for this season. Do you disagree?

What does that have to do with anything though?  They could have not brought back anyone under team control back if they so chose.  As for Leury, they had to compete with other teams and for some reason decided to pay an above market rate for his services.

Because my view of offseason acquisitions was based upon the premise that they were new to the White Sox in 2022. I didn’t include Leury or anyone else that was already on the roster in 2021 regardless of their contract status (free agent, arb eligible, etc).
