It's the position of the otoliths (little rocks) in the semi-circular canal. The tests and exercises are usually the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. Although there are others. Expand I never had it fully diagnosed but I had a bad bout of what you're describing for like 3-4 months, it finally went away after doing some exercises recommended by my doctor. But it SUCKED.
