I don't think it was that bad. When he walked off, his arm was in normal position. If you have ever hurt your hand or wrist, you always hold it up.

Hopefully just a stinger that’ll be ok in a few days. Guess we’ll find out today if this is a true DTD thing.

Sliding head first is faster and creates different opportunities to avoid a tag. You don't go in spikes high trying to steal a base. "go in spikes up maybe next time the defense will think about it". No they won't. Get a stolen base attempt every 2-3 games? Should change the rule and make it just like home plate. Their has to be a lane, can't block the base sliding in.

There are clearly advantages to sliding head first, but the medical facts confirm it is much safer to slide feet first.

I agree with PitchatRisktoZisk who said "Go in spikes high and it will be the last time the 2nd baseman drops his knee in front of the bag"! If that second baseman wants to cut the bag off with his knee and foot, then good luck to him and let him pay the price!

Lou Brock stole 938 bases and is second all time on the MLB career stolen base list. He always slid feet first.

Yep, now the next time Robert steals 2nd against the Tigers he should 100% do this. This is going to be a good lesson for Schoop

Yeah I mean Engel should have smoked Schoop later in the game and retaliation of some degree is 100% necessary. Tony probably forgot all about it by now tho.

You're absolutely right someone should have taken out Schoop if not that game, definitely in in this series. Of course senile TLR forgot to retaliate, because this is the same loser manager who ripped Yermin Mercedes for hitting a 3-0 home run with a huge lead.

He's (about to be) a 24 year old who played professionally in Japan. This isn't some draft pick out of high school. Playing in AA makes little sense. He already is developed.

…in the Japanese minors. Basically AA ball.

Give him AAA at bats.

Luis Robert hurt . there was a time that i would be all upset over this . now i read that and its, "Yea, that figures".

Yeah, injuries bring a different reaction now that's for sure. I agree with the above poster. Injuries are expected now at least by me. Baseball sure has a host of problems and injuries continues to be one of them. There's absolutely no reason to go to a game anymore in person, except to enjoy a beautiful evening outside. The sport is too flawed to care about deeply anymore.

Ricky Henderson has 1400 stolen bases and probably slid head first 90% of the time? And again you don't slide into second trying to steal a base spikes up. You are more than likely going to be out doing that. So sure go make an out for the point of sending some message that won't even matter.

sliding head first is slower as you're leaving your feet for the dive into the base. running keeps sprint speed the entire duration of the play. the point about tag avoidance is nullified because you're slower which gives the opponent more time to apply a tag

edit: wait are we talking about sliding into 1B? lol my point applies to 1B, not the other bases

Yes, Rocky Henderson stole over 1400 bases sliding head first. However long before Henderson, Lou Brock stole 938 bases (2nd all time) all feet first and he was considered the greatest base stealer of all time until Henderson came along.

Actually if you go look at the play again, Robert easily beat the throw and would have been safe if he slid feet first. A normal feet first slide doesn't have to be malicious spikes up slide, but will give the runner a much less chance of getting injured. At least in that play last night, Schoop blocking 2nd would have been made him more likely to get hurt from a feet first slide from Robert.

BTW Eloy is more injury prone than Robert

Think about, the entire team is injury prone, Eloy on the other hand is uncoordinated, doesn't know how to run, and has a tough time seeing and catching the ball without running into a net or wall.  THe dude is an injury waiting to happen.

Must be a TLR unwritten rule not to retaliate on this kind of play.

Broken ankle lol.  Torn knee ligaments or groin/hip flexor again.

He would have been safe sliding feet first into a blocked base? Stop talking about Lou Brock. Of course he slid feet first. Everyone did then, it wasn't because "that was the safe and sound way" it was because no one really thought to slide head first before.

In the Japanese majors . Limited time of course but he didn't suck and those who do not suck over a longer period of time in Japan come to MLB and some even do well. Normally it's the bigger + talented Japanese players but Colas is not small in stature.

Plenty of Japanese player would have good careers in MLB. It's just very hard for them to uproot their lives and often they are tied to their team for many years.

Colas had to really make a stink to get out of his commitment to his Japanese team then missed a lot of time because of that and then waiting for when MLB could draft him internationally.

For a guy who hasn't played in a while and again a stranger in a strange land he has done remarkably well.
