They figured they’d get the power bat, and that Nick would fit in as the scrappy guy that gets hits and makes the routine play. They took what they perceived as a high floor guy. Didn’t work out. They finally get him the right coach + he's healthy aaaaand he's gone. You could probably make a Top 10 list of all the mistakes the Sox made since the middle of the season 2021,maybe more if you take not getting more left handed into account and gross negligence of the minors and tools for player development, which goes back before 2021. Extend it back farther into the rebuild years ,Multiple training staffs due to massive amounts of injuries to the core, TLR, Kimbrel/Pollock that whole mess, Cesar Hernandez, Kelly,Diekman,Madrigal, Collins, Fulmer, Leury contract, Moncada extension, Rodon mess , Shelly Duncan, multiple changes among exec in charge of player personnel development, the RF suck fest, 1st Basemen in the OF, not taking IFA seriously for building a talent base. I know I'm forgetting things. Then throw in Covid , the lockout and its been really messy since the initial trading for prospects to start the rebuild. But I could write a book on that lead up to his draft. I was happy sox selected madrigal, you read the write-ups, and a whole bunch of things that to me were not projection were written about him. You were getting a guy who was a defensive whiz. Amazing base runner and instincts. Prodigious hit tool. Sure, lacks power but what he does have, he gets all of it. Insane makeup. (that last one is unforgiveable from Hostetlers team) And what makes me most annoyed is these same writers started to walk back this stuff about madrigal by August (so 2 months post draft). And by time he was in charlotte, man it was clear a bunch was bullshit. So, basically as much as he is an annoying person to read, you have to take keith law seriously. His sourced scouts are very good and critical especially against romantic stuff like madrigals grindiness. Now, the other thing unfortunately is the 2018 draft was garbage. Some post in 5 years is gonna be like "actually Nick Madrigal had like 6th most WAR in the first round" blah blah. This is the main thing right here. We bought a lemon, no doubt. No idea who failed here, but glad things were changed after because he was NOT what we were told he was. All of his pluses turned into mediocres very quickly.
bmags
1 hour ago, Dick Allen said: It is amazing how the Sox always seem to have a pretty high slot in drafts that ultimately sucked. High picks in bad drafts, and then like not even a first round pick in one of the best drafts of the millenium in 2011. By the time the white sox drafted Keenyn Allen 47th, sixteen future all stars had been selected. And that's shorthand, it misses Brandon Nimmo, Kolten Wong, Joe Ross and more. And 5 more all stars selected between Allen and Erik Johnson. The white sox then select scott snodgrass before Mookie Betts. This draft the white sox ended up selecting a future MVP finalist in Marcus Semien, and it was still a bad draft considering how much talent there was. The sox ended up nailing two drafts better than pretty much every other franchise in 2013 and 2010, and yet had they stacked 2009* and 2011 correctly it could have been a very different decade. But yeah, the sox sell and tank into some awful drafts. Thems the breaks, the cubs tanked into some incredible ones. Luckily the phillies weren't just relying on mickey moniak. *while trout is the easy one, look at how differently round 2 could go. Trayce Thompson was selected between Nolan Arenado and Jason Kipnis, and then DJ Lemahieu, Patrick Corbin and Kyle Seager go at the end.

The biggest thing that jumped out to me is the Sox starting depth is going to be tested, as Kopech still isn’t 100 pct and Clevinger might be on an innings limit. At least we know Hahn will stay busy to ensure injuries can’t derail the team!!! I think it's admirable Hahn is just leaning completely into "everyone stay healthy, have career years, and we'll be fine" by not prioritizing depth literally anywhere on the roster

There's a reason he's likely to come cheap and the Sox don't have enough in the system to land someone better. Getting anything resembling Madrigal's career line is likely an upgrade over Romy & Sosa.
