Capn12
Colon for free agency Not that I am surprised...we may see him back in a Sox uni, but I am not too heart-broken if he isnt. IMO KW did what he had to do, considering this regime's history.

Flash Tizzle
Im trying to look for a positive spin if Colon doesnt sign with the Sox......and this is about all I can think of. With the money that would of been spent towards Bartolo we can possibly pick up two solid starters or try to fill other holes in our team: Shortstop, Relief pitching,1B

I don't really have that high of an opinion on Ponson....when it was discovered that the Orioles were setting him up to pitch against other teams #3 and 4 starters, so that if and when a trade was made. they would receive mor than he is worth. Add on to that the fact that he absolutely was putrid in the postseason...we have enough guys that can choke when we need them the most... whitesox247
This is not surprising. Looks like we'll move to Plan B, which could be Sir Sidney Ponson. He really doesnt excite me like Bart. I'd much rather have Ponson at this point. This is a kid that will go deep into games day in and day out and just battles out there. His best season is yet to come. I hear he also has a good attitude and it would spare us the "Attack of the Colones Part IXXX" every start from ncorg.
Wise Master Buehrle
I'd test the free agent market too, if I was him. He's just doing what a lot of players do, even though I doubt he'll be on our team next year anyways.

Add on to that the fact that he absolutely was putrid in the postseason...we have enough guys that can" This has got to be one of the most overrated statements I have seen. Over the course of a season rotations get mixed up and very rarely do #1 face other #1 ect. Rotations are generally only set during the start of the season, SOMETIMES after days off, SOMETIMES after the AS break, and SOMETIMES during the stretch run. Attempting to make Ponson look worse because of this is a joke. If you truely believe in what you wrote above, than the same should be said about Loaiza. Did teams put in their 3rd and 4th string offensive players? Because last time I checked the starting pitcher faces the other teams offense. Does the pitcher they are matched up against affect the amount of hits, runs, walks, strikeouts, ect? Use your head buddy before you make statements like the above. The fact is that Ponson would be a nice replacement with little drop off from Colon. He is young, a workhorse, and has seen his numbers improve almost every year. With that said my top choice to replace Colon is Batista. I am really surprised that few guys have mentioned him. He has been very good over the past 3 years, has nasty stuff, and could be had for only 4-5M.

I havent thought much about Batista, he would more than in fill in at the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation. Especially since I dont believe Schoweis will pitch too well as a starter. Him or Wilson Alvarez would be solid pickups and would avoid the Cotts/Porzio/Wright that might have cost us the playoffs last season. DBAHO
It'll be interesting to see where Colon ends up this off-season. He says he doesn't want to go to da Yankess but will a big fat paycheck change his mind? I think he wants to go to Boston but can they afford him, when there's talk on them cuttin payroll and trading Nomar or Manny? Besides those 2 I don't think there's many other options for him besides us.
KipWellsFan
I for one don't really want to resign Colon. That is way too much money to shell out for one man, especially on a team with not a huge overall salary. The money could be used on better things. Brian
Anyone think it is possible that Colon, like Alomar, is waiting for the Sox to hire a manager? Kid Gleason
12 million isn't enough for him, I say good riddance! We showed him we were going to go out further for him than anybody else, and KW said he was our main man. The team was willing to show him respect, and if being the highest paid pitcher on Sox history isn't enough respect for him, then I think we can look elsewhere. At that point he is all about himself, so eh, f*** him, we already have a Frank Thomas...for the time being. We have the three guys right now in Burhle, Loaiza, and Garland. Yeah, we need another strong arm out there, but no rush right now, and I am fine with letting him go. As is well documented, it wasn't our pitching that let us down this year, it was the hitting. I think we will be fine without Bart. I liked the guy, that is for sure, but with a team that has shown it is about winning, I was expecting a different outcome, especially when he has said he wanted to stay. The Critic
Could it be that he had to file for FA by some deadline, to keep his options open? If that's the case, he'd be stupid to limit his opportunities. I hope the Sox offer is still in play, but I don't think the Sox should offer any more money or years, given Bart's "David Wells-like" physical fitness plan. Colon's shape ( round ) does not bode well for the 4th year of any deal.
Rex Hudler
The deadline for him to file is Nov. 9. At that point, he can begin negotiating with other teams on Nov. 10, but not until then.
