If they get Harbaugh, then Poles is either on board or he is replaced by Harbaughs guy.  Harbaugh isn’t going to let another 49ers Baalke fiasco happen again

yeah for sure.

I think Las Vegas is more likely.

Good post - it is really interesting how much the national media hates this deal though. Like I can't think of this many deals that have been this panned.  And I get it - high 2nd round picks have a 40% hit rate - that means you are getting a good player on the cheap for 4 years (which is huge - cause you than have cap space for other moves).  With that said - Poles should have assets with two high(ish) 1st round picks to move assets and if they take a QB, I'm guessing they might be able to get a 2nd and future 3rd for Fields (so maybe they view this from that lens).

I do think that Sweat is a good player and his measurables are elite too - so it isn't as if he doesn't have really good athleticism. He also is by all accounts a really good teammate, which may not be what Young is.  So for a team in flux - having those leaders probably helps as well. I just wish they would have got a deal done right away - so you know you have him inked, etc. But I get it - they can use transition tag or franchise etc.

I do feel like Sweat isn't that much better than a Jadaveon clowney type, who has its uses. Good against run, good pass rusher. not elite. And he did have Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne next to him.

I think Young was trending toward pass rush specialist, personally. And he was extremely undisciplined about getting out of his lanes, but definitely had high Pass rush win rates on ESPN.

I feel like hiring a coach to rescue them from a cheating scandal seems very Raiders material.

I feel like that “good luck” is more to Harbaugh joining that raiders clown show than it is to the raiders in hiring Jim

I know but I think it's kinda both sides needing each other. I don't know that it will work, but kinda feels like a Love Island episode where someones about to be eliminated because they've alienated a bunch of people, only to find someone just broke up and equally kinda sucks.

Fair.  Not sure if Harbaugh wants to work under Davis but who knows

Just hire Harbaugh and give him the reins. Get rid of Poles. The guy has no idea what he's doing. This whole Sweat and Johnson situation is a gigantic mess.

Sweat said today that they haven't even discussed an extension and he wants to "consider everything around him" before signing anything. Word was that Atlanta had a trade worked out for Sweat with an extension in place, but the Bears outbid them at the last minute. So there is a chance that Sweat won't sign an extension and you'd have to tag either him or Johnson. So you can't retain both. Johnson also doesn't seem like he wants to sign an extension. So now 2 of your best players on defense seem like they don't want to be here and you can only keep one of them. Whoever you don't tag has a ton of leverage in extension negotiations and can just rake you over the coals. You'll end up pissing off the guy you tag. Good job Poles.

I could easily swing a positive here - they could not have gotten Sweat without trading a second rounder for him, as ATL was about to trade and extend him.

That kinda validates the reason why you DO trade for an impending free agent, as now you can Franchise him at the very least.

For Johnson, they can still sign him, probably will help if some other deals come in.

That’s a long way of saying “swamp balls”.

It may be lip service but Pole's backing of Eberflus is very concerning. The refusal to acknowledge that there is a culture issue is maddening.

Pole hired Eberflus and he signed off on all the assistant coaches that were brought on. Poles also continues to burn draft capital and doesn't want to retain good, young players.

He has to go.

Biggest trade deadline loser: You guessed it

1. Chicago Bears

They whiffed at the trade deadline a year ago, giving away what became the equivalent of a first-round pick for suspect wide receiver Chase Claypool, and did so again this year, trading a second-round pick for Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat and not moving disgruntled cornerback Jaylon Johnson. Multiple general managers — who spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid without damaging their ability to negotiate with teams in the future — complained that the Bears waited until effectively midnight to make Johnson available, minimizing the window to land him.

“[Bears General Manager Ryan] Poles f---ed it up again,” said one general manager who was in the cornerback market.

“You can’t wait until midnight and then tell everyone in the middle of the night, ‘Now he can seek a trade,’ ” said another general manager, “and then expect teams to compete to negotiate the deal and get to know the player and work something out with the agent. That should have happened two weeks ago.” Another executive who was in talks with Poles said: “He has a really difficult time under the clock. Personally, I don’t get what they did. That’s going to be, what, the 35th pick for Sweat?” Others also panned that deal.

“You can’t make that trade without having him signed,” the second general manager said. “Can you imagine what happens if Sweat gets hurt and they don’t have a deal? What’s the comp pick going to be then [if he leaves as a free agent]? I heard he was going to Atlanta for a [third-round pick] and then Poles swooped in and blew them away. I don’t get it.”

And with the Bears at 2-6, Sweat is unlikely to turn around another lost season.

“Doesn’t make sense for where Chicago is,” the first general manager said. “I’d have rather just traded [a third-round pick] for Chase Young” — the other Commanders edge rusher who went to the San Francisco 49ers at that price. “They should have been selling.”
