David Eckstien's value?

I've heard David Eckstien mentioned a few times as a possible addition to the Sox. I've always felt he was a "flash in the pan" in 2002. I found this within an ESPN article Alan Schwarz:

The curtain has been pulled on Eckstein, one year after being anointed the patron saint of every short white guy who didn't make varsity. A player who derives most of his scant offensive value from batting average -- Eckstein barely ever walks or hits for power -- saw his batting average drop 41 points this year. (He did miss a month with nerve irritation in his right hamstring and had some other bumps and bruises, but he hit just as poorly before the injuries.) Overall, his .651 OPS ranked 17th among the 21 major-league shortstops who qualified for the batting title. He is not an asset.

and to take it a step further, at best Miles=Eckstein, at worst Miles=Caruso.

I agree and have previously referred to Miles as an Eckstein type. I am not saying he can't have a good year or two in the Majors, but I do not think you will see long term success from him unless it is as a backup. His ability to play 3B will help him in that regard, but he still gives you less flexibility than a Graffy or even a guy who can play OF as well.
