The Beast
Okay I don't get it. When you waive a big vet with huge money left on the contract on waivers, how much money accumulated does the team owe? What is the percentage or Mathematic Equation of deferral goes out....in the wake of Manny Ramirez for example...
Capn12
Beastley, I believe that if a team picks up Manny off waivers, that team is responsible for the rest of his contract. If no one picks him up, then he will have cleared waivers, and teams can sign him for a certain % of his last salary. I believe that is correct, although I'm not sure about the resign amount you can get the player for.

I just know it rarely happens...didn't the Tigers pour a s*** load of money in higginson and do that and he got pulled back?
Capn12
The most well known usage of the waiver wire was when San Diego put Randy Myers on waivers in the 90's, and teh Braves picked him up to keep thier competitors from picking him up. They were stuck with a broken down reliever with a HUGE contract.

Ouch that sucks...I no the Cubbies did that with Deshields and the Orioles with Batista...but their contracts weren't like mega big
Rex Hudler
This situation is a bit different than the Randy Myers situation or waivers that you hear about around the trade deadline. In that situation, the club that owns the players contract has the right to pull the player off waivers if claimed. Ramirez was placed on irrevocable waivers, which means that if a team claims him, they get him. Boston has no right to pull him back if claimed. If he is claimed (which he likely won't be) then club that places the claim on him inherits him and his current contract. If he is not claimed, his contract is still in place with Boston and nothing changes. This sounds like a big deal, but because of the size of Ramirez' contract, it really isn't. the likelihood of him being claimed is very small. Capn12
So, Rex, that current contract is pretty much set in stone for Manny then? If thats teh case, yeah no one is gonna bite on Manny
forkit
Boston is just hoping that someone wants Manny but can't stomach paying a quadrillion dollars AND throwing in a bag of balls...so they are offering door number three: Hold your hand up and you, too, can owe Manny AT LEAST $100 million dollars!!! But...like I said before about a different player...maybe no one will show up at that price. The economic times have changed since someone at Boston lost their mind trying to outbid George [How would you have liked to win that bidding war???]. Forkit! SuperSteve
I do not understand why everyone is saying Manny is waived. As Rex said, he was only put on irrevocable waivers. This is the only place I have read he was waived. Some people should read articles a little better. Also, wasn't Myers picked up by the Padres. I could have sworn it was the Pads who were stuck with him.

I got too many baseball facts rolling around in my head, sorry!!
YASNY
One other point about Ramirez. If no one claims him on waivers and Boston releases him, then whoever he signs with will only have to pay the major league minimum salary and the BoSox would be on the hook for the rest. I think that's how it works.

They'll try and trade him or keep him and hope that this sent a message to him to get his s*** straight.
